BOXING. GEORGE COOkTDEFEATED. (Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, Sept. 20. At Chicago this evening, Griffiths (13st) gained a verdict over George Cook (13st 81b), the Australian heavyweight, by a technical knock-out in the fourth round. In the first round Griffiths had the advantage in slugging Cook, who went into numerous clinches, losing the round. The infighting was even in the second round, Cook showing more generalship, but Griffiths, owing to his slugging, took the round toward the end, when Cook appeared to be hurt after dropping for a count of eight. The third round also went to Griffiths, who sent punches to the Australian’s face, which was bleeding. Cook covered up fairly successfully while his opponent attempted a knock-out. The end came in the fourth round, when Griffiths attacked the Australian with a series of rights to the head and solar plexus. Then with a left hook lie dropped Cook, who attempted to rise, but the Australian’s seconds would,not allow him to continue. BOUT AT SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Sept. 22. At the Sydney Stadium last night Pat Redmond, the Irish giant, knocked out “Blackio” Miller, the ex-Austra-lian heavyweight champion, in the fourth of a scheduled fifteen-round bout. Miller was twice warned in the third round owing to carelessness as to where his blows landed. The management decided to withhold Miller’s share of the gate money pending an inquiry into his conduct in the third round, also because it is alleged that he illegally took the count in the fourth. RUGBY LEAGUE. (Australian Press Association—United Service.) LONDON, Sept. 21. The Australian Rugby League team defeated Broughton Rangers by 21 points to 8. CYCLE ROAD RACE. ADELAIDE, Sept. 22. The cycle road race from Adelaide to Kapunda and return, a distance of 132 miles, was won by H. Opperman in 7hrs. 20min. Thirty-three started. H. It. Mason was runner-up. LAWN TENNIS. Playing in the Pacific South-West tennis championship on Saturday, in an exhibition match, Keith Gledhill (Santa Barbara) beat Olliff (England), 6 3, 6—l. Betty NutTiall and Caroline Babcock (Santa Monica) beat Midge Gladman and Helen Marlowe (Los Angeles), 6—2, 7—5. In exhibition play, Betty Nuthall and Bunny Austin beat Edith Cross and Doeg, 7 6—o. WRESTLING. MELBOURNE, Sept. 22. Pesek last night defeated Santel in the sixth round. Santel had the best of it in four rounds. Pesek shocked his opponent by throwing him through the ropes, and then dumping him on the back of his head so hard that he was unable to continue. The crowd hooted the decision.
