DOWN THE LINE

OTAKI, Sept. 20., A local farmer, who recently returned from a trip through the Manawatu district, states that the season there is backward, and taken all through this district is well favoured.

Among those who figured largely during the week at Wellington and district flower shows were Messrs Burgese, Bramley, Witchcll, Small and Howell, all well-known growers of this district.' The Ilautere Rifle Club held a euchre party and dance on Wednesday eveniifg but, unfortunately, the attendance was small. Those present, however, spent a pleasant time. Prizes were won by Mrs Bills and Mr Pain, and consolation trophies by Miss Jean Rusling and Mr Max Fielding, Mrs Rusling supplied the dance music.

There was mild excitement at the Otaki Sanatorium on Tuesday evening owing to an outbreak of fire in a chimney. The superintendent (Mr Cockrell) of the local Fire Brigade was communicated with, and with a few men was quickly on the scene. The fire was 6ubdued before any damage was done.

A most enjoyable evening was spent at the fire station on Wednesday when the brigadesmen and fire police met in a euchre and crib tournament. Several interesting games were played, the brigado being the winners with eight games to the good. At the conclusion supper was served and appreciated, after which DeputySuperintendqnt Mathie thanked the police for their challenge and the enjoyable evening provided. He hoped that more such tournaments would bo played. Captain C. B. Smyth, on behalf of the police, returned thanks, stating that hie side, although beaten, had had a &ood time. He assured all that the police would look forward to another such evening. Cheers were then exchanged.

Mr W. Skipwith, of Otaki, was last evening taken to Palmerston North hospital for medical treatment.

At the annual general meeting of the Hautere Defence Rifle Clnb the president, Mr J. Guy, was in the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patrons, Mr G. A. Monk; president, Mr J.
