WIN FOR AIANAWATU. HAWKE’S BAY BEATEN. With a stronger team than that which had drawn with the Brown Shield holders (South Auckland) Hawke’s Bay were expected to prove hard to beat at North Street on Saturday. A very even game was witnessed, Manawatu being a little superior in all departments to win by three goals to nil. The game was hard rather than brilliant, though both goalies got through much spectacular work. The teams were as follow:
Alanawatu (green and white). —Tarrant; Askam, Hearsey ; Coombs, John, J. Crowe; AlcSheffery, Baigent, Goodall, H. Childs, A. Young. Hawke's Bay (black and white). — Tasker; Stenson, Holmes; Marchant, Gray, Butcher; Simmons, H. Penman, D. Penman, G. Young, Brehaut. Hawke’s Bay won the toss and, with the wind behind them, Simmonds and H. Penman made a nice run down the side-line. There was a hectic rally in tho greens’ mouth, Tarrant saving brilliantly. The visitors were unlucky not to score. Askliam drove the black invaders back with a strong kick for the green forwards to get going, j Goodall and Baigent both missed difficult shots, Hawke’s Bay returning to the attack. McSheffcry broke away down the line, Holmes halting the movement. Back swarmed the blacks to force a corner. The kick was a beautiful one, but Tarrant jumped to punch clear. Gray tried a shot, the ball clearing the bar. AlcSheffery, Childs and Young were associated in some nice passing till the last named sent on to J. Crowe who had come up on the outside. He tried a shot, hut Tasker cleared opportunely. Play was ragged and altcrnatingly in favour of either side. Then came a bright interlude. Coombs passed to' Baigent, who sent on to AlcSheffery. Tho winger crossed square for Childs to head out to Young who took it in liis stride to shoot hard for the corner of the net. Tho ball struck the cross-bar and Tasker with a magnificent save extricated his side from a nasty position. Hawke’s Bay raided in turn, their speedy forwards enabling them to bustle the green defence to force a corner. They were temporarily repulsed, and then Shnmonds streaked up the side-line to pass neatly along the ground to D. Penman. The centre put up a beautiful high shot, but Tarrant, with a nicely-timed effort, tipped the ball over the bar. Breliart secured from the play following the corner, but his cross was wide. Simmonds tried to get through the defence, John holding him up. Hawke’s Bay came again to force a corner. Askliam cleared to touch, the blacks returning only for the ball to go behind. Hawke’s Bay’s whole forward line swung into action, but D. Penman could not set himself for his shot, which went wide. Childs and Young went away nicely down the side-line prior to the latter crossing. Goodall ran through fast, but just failed to beat Holmes for the ball and the back, who was playing a magnificent game, cleared. The visitors swung into action once more, Simmonds sending on to H. Penman. Tarrant coolly picked the ball off the oncoming forward’s toes to punt down field. AlcSheffery secured to pass to Baigent who drove past Tasker to put Alanawatu in the lead just before the half-time whistle. Alanawatu 1, Hawke’s Bay 0.
SECOND SPELL. Manawatu open strongly after the interval. Young crossed nicely, but the green insides could not quite reach the ball with their heads. Then McSheffeiy hooked a first-time shot over the bar and Tasker held a hard drive from Goodall. Young (Hawke’s Bay) broke away to be halted by John. Not to be denied, the greens - came back. McSheffery passed to Coombs who sent on to Goodall, the centre sending a beautiful header into the net. Manawatu 2, Haivke’s Bay 0. Encouraged by their success, the greens continued to hammer away, stenson and Holmes, however, proving hard to pass. The blacks rallied, but D. Penman, after getting within, striking distance, lifted the ball over the bar. The play swung to the other side of the field when Brehaut, dallying with the ball, enabled Askain to clear: A. Young went away with a typical run to cross to Baigent, Stenson sending the shot over the bar. A vigorous Hawke’s Bay onslaught saw Brehaut run in nicely, but Tarrant threw cleai from a nasty position. He and Hearsey were injured during the melee, but both were able to resume. Manawatu retaliated, delay in following in a shot from MeSheffery allowing Tasker to clear. Back swarmed the visitors and the greens conceded a corner. From the kick Brehaut shot accurately along the ground only for Tarrant to make another brilliant save. H. Penman was the next would-be scorer, Askam deflecting the ball. The wind had dropped somewhat and the visitors were having a larger share of the territorial advantage. When Manawatu had worked upfield, John passed into the centre. Goodall’s header was not accurate. Young, however, them sent a beautiful shpt right into the corner of the net, an exactly similar goal to the one he
had secured against Wanganui. • Manawatu 3, Hawke’s .Bay 0. Butcher at left half for the Bay was playing a great game, keeping MeSheffery well bottled up. At last the latter managed to get clear and a nice cross looked dangerous, but Tasker was safe. A sudden breakaway by the visitors was nullified by D. Penman again shooting wide. After ragged, even play Butcher tried a long shot, but Tarrant saved well and full time came with no alteration in the scores:—
