PANAMA, Sept. 21. Private Daniel Smith, of tho Army Service Division, and Radio-Operator Deuter were together in the rear seat of a bombing aeroplane 2000 feet above Gatun Lake. Private Smith stumbled and fell through the bombing compartment. He grabbed the tape of a parachute on which Deuter was sitcing and drew Deuter’s parachute with him.

Smith pulled the rip-cord of his own parachute, landing safely. The pilot and two observers continued, unaware of the accident, iintil they discovered Deuter unconscious.
