TWO STOWAWAYS.
APPEARANCE IN COURT
AUCKLAND. Sept. 23.
To tramp more than 500 miles through England and finally, despairing of finding work, to stow away on the Papanui at Liverpool, was part of the experience of two New Zealanders who appeared in the Magistrate s Court. Thomas Tange, alias Townsend, aged 22, and Hugh Ludlow, aged 30; pleaded guilty to charges of stowing away on the Papanui at Liverpoolon August 3. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, the two men had left New Zealand as trimmers in the Otira in Mav last. At Rio De Janeiro they hacT missed their ship and been given a passage to Southampton by the British Consul, They had then walked to Liverpool and “jumped” the Papanui. They were found when the ship was two days out. “Ludlow has appeared hero on a similar charge once before, added the sub-inspector. ' Captain Hicks, of the Papanui, said that the men had worked well, and behaved themselves during the voyage out. He considered that they should receive some punishment, however, as stowing away was becoming too frequent and should be checked. Both men were sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. It is understood that during their long tramp through England and Wales the two comrades had no money, and found but little .work. On landing at Southampton they tried to find a ship without success. Nothing daunted, they set out to walk to London, more than a hundred miles distant. where they felt sure they could find "work or a ship. In London they also drew a blank, and fancy turned them toward Bristol. They lived on dry bread with an occasional piece cf cheese, and slept with no covering but the sky except when a kindly farmer opened his barn to them. Sometimes even that failed, and they were forced to spend the time in a workhouse. No work could be found in Bristol, so they tramped on through Wales and arrived in Liverpool. There they found the Papanui bound for New Zealand, and the urge was too much for them.
