MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Sept, 25. At tho Magistrate’s Court, Taihape, Mr R. M. Watson heard the sequel to a collision between two cars near Winiata on June 18 last, when R. Potaka, of Utiku, sued P. Condliffe, bond salesman ,of Taihape, for the sum of £7B 15s 8d damages, and defendant counter-claimed for £39 12s 6d. After lengthy evidence had been heard, His Worship held that defendant was to blame in that he did not allow plaintiff sufficient room to pass —the question of speed was of no moment. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the sum of £4l 7s, with costs £6 19s, also on the counterclaim, costs £3 being allowed on tho latter. At Marton, to-day’, Mr Watson presided over the fortnightly sitting of the court. Several cases had to be adjourned owing to the illness of important witnesses. Alton Over, a Marton motorist, for cutting a corner, was fined £1 and costs 10s. B. de Laurier was fined 10s and costs 10s on each of two charges—riding a cycle at night without a light, and riding a cycle on a footpath. Joseph Jellyinan, a lorry driver, of Marton, was fined £2 and costs 10s for driving a motor lorry in a manner dangerous to the public on the main highway between Marton and Turakina. Defendant stated that his vision of ihe rear was blocked by a tank on his lorry, and when he attempted to turn into a gateway, he allowed one vehicle to overtake and pass him, but failed to observe that there was a second car proceeding in the same direction. H. Meads, carrier, of Bulls, was prosecuted for overloading a motor lorry on the Bulls-Turakina highway, on which there is a restriction of traffic to eight tons weight. Defendant entered a plea of guilty’. The traffic inspector stated that the lorry and its load combined weighed 12 tons lOcsvt. The solicitor for defendant said his client had endeavoured to-dispose of the vehicle as it weighed five tons and was not of much use to him on a road where such a restriction applied. The magistrate pointed out that the restriction was there and had to obeyed. Defendant had been fined three times previously for similar offences, and on this occasion he would be mulcted in the sum of £lO, and costs 3.05. Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default in the following undefended civil eases: —E. Pickford v. Thomas Sanson. £2, costs £1 5s 6d; Mauri Bros nnd Thomson, Ltd. v. A. Pierson, £l3 19s, costs £2 14s. GENERAL. The Huntorville School Committee has received advice from the Education Board that the secondary department of the school will be closed at the end of this year unless written guarantees are forthcoming that not less than 20 pupils will attend next year. The balance-sheet of the Taihape Chamber of Commerce, presented at tho annual meeting, showed a credit of £4 11s Id. The following officers were elected : —President, Mr H. M. McCallum; vice-presidents, .Messrs W. H. Maclean and A. R. Fannin; executive committee, Messrs H. L. Butler, H. Christensen, G. Loader, F. Read, J. Collinson, D. Neagle, F. White, W. Nicholls, P. Pedersen, A. Johnston, W. Wilson and J. E. Hamill; auditor, Mr A. M. Ryan; secretary, Mr F. Sparkes. The report dealt at length with the various activities of the chamber. The Ranagitikei A. and P. Association (Taihape) has decided to hold its next show on January 29 and 30, as the original dates selected clashed with the Masterton Show and Ram Fair on February 19 and 20. The following stewards have been appointed : Messrs A. K. Overton, B. C. Fitzherbert (horses), C. A. Stewart, W. N. Anderson (cattle), A. McCioll, H. H. Harris (dogs), H. S. Tobeck, J. B. Thomason (sheep), W. McCombio, F. Garmonsway (home industries). A. W. Bicknell, W. R. Anderson (grounds), J. Collier, R. Anderson (sheep guessing). Just before being unloaded from a motor lorry at Marton on Tuesday afternoon, a heavy stallion went through the flooring of the lorry and was badly cut about the legs. The animal lost a lot of blood, but it was not found necessary to destroy it. The Hunterville Pipe Band committee has decided that the band will be unable to compete in the pipe bands contest at Dunedin next February’. Mr and Mrs J. W. Bailey, of Wanganui, presented the pantomime “Aladdin” in the Marton Town Hall on Monday evening. The Wanganui City Council last night passed a motion of congratulation to Marton on attaining its jubilee as a borough. PERSONAL. Mr S. Powell has returned to Taihapo from a visit to Auckland. Mr A. Way, of Marton, who has been visiting Auckland in connection with the business of the New Zealand Ah to Cycle Union, has returned to Marton. Miss W. Wootton, of Wanganui, who has been visiting friends in Rangitikei, has gone homo. Mr J. P. Miortland, of Taihape, is visiting Wanganui.
