LONGBURN CLUB
The tenth annual meeting of the Longburn Tennis Club was held in the Longburn school on Monday evening when there was a large attendance. The report by the president for the past season was adopted as follows: “The credit balance is small owing to heavy expenditure on nets and other necessities, but in view of the fact that a large portion of it will be nonrecurring for some years the financial position must be considered satisfactory. The competitions resulted as follow: Championships, ladies, Miss F. Tanner; men Mr L. Hills; handicaps, ladies, Miss F. Tanner; men, Mr E. L. Jewell. The competitions were productive of some very keenly contested and enjoyable games and the committee congratulates the various winners. The committee again appeals to members to finalise the competitions much earlier as tho finals are played much too late in the season. The cooperation of members in this matter would be much appreciated. During the season a series of matches for the Nicol Stars were played, Mr and Mrs Garner being the first holders, and they successfully defended them against all comers. The committee wish to congratulate them on their success. During the past season six matches were played against neighbouring clubs with varying success. The return matches with these clubs should receive the early consideration of the incoming committee. Owing to pressure of work the club secretary, Mr F. H. Garner, resigned his position towards the latter part of the year and the committee wish to thank him for his work on behalf of the club while holding that office. The committee wish to congratulate Miss F. Tanner and Mr E. Jewell on gaining places on tho Manawatu Tennis Association’s ranking list. The best thanks of the committee are also due to the ladies who so often supplied afternoon tea at the courts. In conclusion, I would like to mention the bereavement suffered by Mr Nicol, one of our vice-presidents, in the passing of the late Mrs Nicol. All members, I am sure, extend to Mr Nicol and family their sincere sympathy in their great loss.” The election of officers for the ensuing season resulted: —Patron, Mr R. Tanner (re-elected); president, Mr T. Rowlands (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs A. Nicol, J. Flanagan, W. E. Wilson, W. D. Campbell, D. Rowlands and F. S. Birch (nil re-elected) ; eecrery.
