RANGITIKEI.

MARTON EN FETE,

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON Sept. 26. There was a “certain liveliness” about the town of Marton yesterday, the occasion being the first of the series of official celebrations of tho borough jubilee. The town has been in gala dress for several days, but the first function—a parade of school .children and a physical drill display —was tho opening event on the programme. Led by tho Hunterville Pipe Band, tho children marched through the town to the park. Unfortunately, the ■weather was uncertain and what would otherwise have been a very pretty scene was somewhat spoiled by intermittent showers. The Mayor and Councillors and their ladies were present, and the proceedings commenced with tho singing of “God Defend New Zealand” by tho children, under the direction of Mr Thomas Low. Afterwards a display of physical drill was given, and pupils of the Maori Girls’ School entertained tho attendance with several native 60ngs and poi dances. The gathering was a memorable one. To-day tho oldest settlers gather together ' and exchange reminiscences, and on Saturday the carnival will finish with a massed bands demonstration and the crowning of the successful queen.
