TRADE IN AUCKLAND.
PROSPEROUS INDICATIONS. RETAILERS WELL SATISFIED. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 27. Although spring has not yet had its full effect on the buying public, Auckland retailers in general are well satisfied with the present state of business and look forward to a good summer and a prosperous Christmas season in most lines of business, particularly those which are most affected by the changes in the peoples’ purchasing power. There has been a fairly steady improvement since last spring. A few businesses have closed down in the past year, but many moro new ones have sprung up. The sales held in the past few months have been very well patronised by the womenfolk. This is characteristic of the recovery period, showing that the average woman .has money to spend, but feels the bargain hunting urge little more than usual.
“We find that anything offered a little under the market finds a very ready sale,” said one dealer. “We have made some wonderfully-quick clearances of salvage stock this year.” “What is, perhaps, most encouraging, the sales of engagement rings are better than they have been for a long while. You might say that it is a sign of better times coming,” said one jeweller. “No doubt many couples feel that things are good enough to let them marry in a year or two from now”.
