INTRUDER IN COTTAGE.
BETRAYED BY A LIGHT.
ARRESTED WHEN IN BED.
BLENHEIM, Sept. 26. Investigations by the police, following thefts from a number of summer cottages in Queen Charlotte Sound, resulted in the arrest of a young man under somewhat dramatic circumstances. Acting on information that a light had been observed in Mr F. N. Dillon’s cottage at Loclimara,' which was well known to have beer, closed for the winter, Constable Audley, of Picton, chartered a launch and proceeded to make investigations in company with Mr Newton, a launch owner. All was quiet at the cottage when they arrived, but a light was seen, and the watchers discovered a man lying snugly in bed with liquid refreshment close to hand and earphones on his head, enjoying the current wireless
programme from station 2YA. Ho had made himself very snug indeed for the night, but the arrival of Constable Audley and Mr Newton considerably disturbed his plans, for he was arrested forthwith_ on an old charge of alleged theft in connection with which the police have been watching for him for several months. •A search by the constable disclosed a six-chambered revolver and a box cf cartridges suitable for it. These had apparently been stolen from Mr H. Y. Monro’s cottage in Onalmu Bay." A boat complete with an outboard motor had also been stolen from the same place. It is expected that other depredations will be disclosed as a result of the investigations which the police have in hand. The man arrested by Constable Audley appeared before justices at Picton and on the application of Constable Condon was formally remanded until September 30. uutu The news of the arrest aroused a good deal of uneasiness among Blen heim people who own summer cottaces m the sounds, and several immediatelv visited their properties.
