AUSTRIAN CABINET

SUDDEN RESIGNATION.

EXCITING SITUATION. TALK OF REVOLUTION. (United Press Association.—By Electri# Telegraph.—Copyright). (United Service.) Received September 27, 9.0 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 26. The Austrian Cabinet’s resignation on the eve of the meeting of Parlmment has created an exciting situation, owing to the increasing tension between the Heimwehr, otherwise the Fascists, and the Schutzbund, otherwise the Socialists. The resignation has given rise to reports of an impending revolution. Herr Johann Schober, Vienna’s Chief of Police, has been asked to form a Cabinet, and has agreed to do so, provided that he may continue as the police chief. Herr Schober is expected to deal firmly with the theatre of the Heimwehr to march on Vienna; the entire Schutzbund have been ordered to mobilise. Both the Heimwehr and the Schutzbund are armed and organised on military lines. DEFEAT OF THE MODERATES. THREATS OF CIVIL WAR. (Australian Press Association.) VIENNA, Sept. 25. A long period of feverish agitation, accompanied by repeated threats cr civil war, has resulted in the forced resignation of the Chancellor, Herr Streeruwitz. The resignation has been followed by an invitation to Herr Johann Schober, Vienna’s Chief of Police, to form a Cabinet. The overthrow of Herr Streeruwitz means the defeat of the Moderates and their plan to reform tho Constitution, and the victory of the semi-military association of Fascists known as the Heimwehr. During the past few weeks the Heimwehr have been engaged in a very fierce conflict with the Socialists. The new Government will almost certainly be of the nature of the strong hand which the Heimwehr has been demanding. But it may not be so unwelcome to the Socialists who would prefer Herr Scliober’s authority to that of one of the Heimwehr extremists.
