CONGRESS INDEPENDENCE DAY.
PRECAUTIONS IN» CALCUTTA
CALCUTTA, Jan. 25.
The Government’s determination to # prevent demonstrations in. connection with Congress Independence Day today was exemplified by an order in Calcutta calling on the corporation to close all public squares in the city and requiring obedience to this decree. Gandhi’s secretary, Mr Pyrilal, who accompanied him to England, has been sentenced to six months’ hard labour in the Ahmedabad gaol for sedition. Gandhi’s European and Indian disciples at his settlement at Ahmedabad refused to pay £3O revenue demands so the Government confiscated hay and straw to that amount.
ARRESTS NOT SO NUMEROUS
EMERGENCY POWERS AND ORDINANCES.
(British Official Wireless.) ■1 . RUGBY Jan. 25. 1 A summary of last week’s events in ■lndia shows generally a satisfactory tendency. The main features have beep . the diminishing extent to • which arrests under the emergency powers and ordinances have been necessary, especially in the North-West Frontier Province, where a steady improvement has been recorded;. a more peaceful condition in the towns of the United Provinces; and the very slight extent to which the rural areas are at present aHected.
, On the other hand, the Congress apparently is making efforts to recover from 1 the effects of the initial blow dealt by' the authorities for some extension of the Congress activities occurred in particular areas and the effects 1 of the silent boycott were more marked.
