A RESPECTED PIONEER.

To-day Mrs T. Lowes, of Bryant Street, Palmerston North, attained the age of 90 years! < Mrs Lowes, who is the widow of the late Mr Thomas Lowes, was born in Gatehead, England, and came to New Zealand with her late husband and a young family 68 years ago.. After residing-in Wellington, where the late Mr Lowes engaged in-business for about five years, the family removed to Masterton. They remained there for about four years when. Mr Lowes . was attracted to this side of the range as the developments. and prospects seemed to give greater promise. This was 49 years ago, when Palmerston North was quite a small town and the district in itß infancy. Mrs Lowes has seen the country change from a vast forest with comparatively few clearings to the closely settled and highly improved district it now is with many villages and quite' a large and prosperous community. Mrs Lowes and the late Mr Lowes were widely known and highly respected amongst the early settlers of Wellington, Wairarapa and the Manawatu, and the friends of the family will be pleased to know that Mrs Lowes is' still in out midst, though feeling the strain, of a lpng, strenuous and useful life. It will be recognised that Mrs Lowes, with her t late husband, experienced the vicissitudes of pioneering days in the Wellington province and more particularly in this district. For one who has assisted in the pioneering days and who has attained such an age her health is fair.
