MISHAP TO EXPRESS
7 A MINOR DERAILMENT. ACCIDENT NEAR SHANNON. The mishap which occurred to the Wellington-New Plymouth express and caused a slight derailment near Shannon, as reported in the “Standard”', yesterday, made the train two hours. Late, and it did not arrive at this centre until 3:16 p.m. "The cause of the accident was a mishap to the undergear of the first carriage. "The accident seriously damaged the front bogey wheels .of the car and caused its derailment. It is believed that this was due to an iron jack falling off the engine to the track. Passengers in the derailed car informed a “Standard”' representative that the train ran for about a quarter of a idile after the mishap until the driver was apprised of the. situation by the pulling of the communication cord. The carriage humped heavily and left the rails, the wheels of the damaged bogey travelling along the sleepers. The mishap caused some consternation to some of the passengers until the train was pulled up, when it was found that the axle box and undergear of the front .carriage had been badly damaged, forcing the wheels off the line. They had cut deeply into the sleepers and left ample evidence of their track. The carriage was jacked up, restored to the line and removed to Shannon, after which the engine returned to bring on tho remainder of the train.
