WEDNESDAY COMPETITIONS. TWO COMFORTABLE WINS. Ideal weather conditions favoured the Wednesday cricket competitions at the Sportsground yesterday afternoon. Optimists had a comfortable four-point win over Relief Workers, compiling 194 for seven wickets, when a declaration was made. Childs was top scorer for Optimists and just failed to reach his half century, but his innings was not without blemish. He ha'd two liyes early when easy catches were dropped in' succession at mid-on. Evans, who contributed a handy 39 to his side’s total, batted with confidence until he was unfortunate enough to be run out. Relief Workers ran up a small total of 72 in their first strike, Rice’s bowling being very effective. They fared but little better. when they went to the wickets again, to be dismissed for 85. ■ Their figures for both innings .were still well short of their opponents’ total for a' single uncompleted innings. P.D.C. LOSE TO UNITED SERVICE. P.D.C. compiled 116 in their first strike against United Services. Brace, the opening batsman, batted vigorously for 27 before 1 being caught by Stubbs. He hit six fours. Allen gave quite a sparkling display until he was run out. Ensor, the opening batsman for United Services, laid the foundation, for a solid innings when he contributed a nice 66 ; including eleven fours.- His remaining runs were all singles. Stubbs was in good form to play a fine innings. He scored freely with pretty strokes all round the wicket once ho had collared the bowling, and his tally included 16 fours. Heapliy gave a hard hitting display which included two sixers before he was run out. Combined Services declared with their total standing-at 218 for seven wickets. Sent in again, P.D.C. made a bad start when Hooker stepped out to the first ball and was bowled. Brace ran up a steady 32. With the total at 8 wickets for 95 runs, time expired, and United Service failed to Secure a four-point win, having to be content with a victory in the first innings.
