SWIMMING CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL PEILDING FIXTURE.

NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED

The swimmipg season^in ,I’exlding was successfully opened last nign when the local club held a carnival the Municipal Baths. A large number of spectators were present, together with competitors from all parts of the Manawatu Centre .and Wanganui. In declaring the season open, S Mr J. G. Eliott, patron, of the club, thanked the public tor the liberal patronage that was ulnars accorded the Feilding clubs efforts, and the competitors for the long-distance some of them had come to take part in the carnival. A lengthy programme with up to. seven heats in some events. was then entered upon and until a late hou those present were treated to some fine exhibitions of the natatorial art. A feature of the meeting was the at,tempt of Miss P.' bperle, of_ J) upon her own record for the Manawatu Centre for the intermediate girls 100 yards championship,, and in this sne was successful, clipping 3 4-Ssecs off the time by doing the distance in 73 secs, her effort being greeted with cheers. • During the programme an amusing interlude was provided by a party of visiting swimmers in burlesque diving, etc., in fancy costume. At a suitable juncture, the Mayor, Mr C. E. Taylor, addressed the gathering and spoke of the happy relations which existed between the Borough Council and the Swimming Club which he wished every success during , the season. At his call cheers were given for Messrs J. G. Eliott and H. Parsonage and other officials, of th© chid, and also for the visiting swimmers. Robinson (Terrace End) withdrew after completing 50 yard# by which time she was half the length of the baths behind Miss Sporle who did the 60 yards in 32 seefends. Sprinting over the final 25 yards Miss -Sporle completed the 100 yards distance in 73 secs, breaking her previous record for the Manawatu Centro by 3 4-ssec.
