CITY COUNCIL STAFF.

PICNIC AT PLIMMERTON. Although the weather conditions had been somewhat threatening on Tuesday night, yesterday morning broke fine and the employees of the City Council and their families and friends attended in force for the annual pwnic at Plimmerton, a train -composed of 15 carriages transporting some 7UU picnickers to the seaside. On arrival at their destination the visitors found that a‘high spring tide was awaiting them, and although a delay was entailed in getting the programme of foot racing events, etc,, under way, bathers took full advantage of the opportunity to enter the water. As soon a* the tide receded sufficiently to permit of the programme being entered upon a aeries of events for the children were contested, while such' competitions as sand-building, treasure hunts, eto., were staged to their great delight. In the sand building competition considerable originality was displayed, the winning exhibit being a model of 2ZF station, the second exhibit a Maori pal, and the third a model °f “Wizard’' Smith’s racing car, the Enterprise, The adult sports programme was productive of many fine contests, the results being as under: —Married men employees 100 yards handicap: A, Ward 1, G Franklin 2, Single men 100 yards handicap, open; T, Downing I, J. Robb 2, Married ladies’ handicap (employees’ wives), 76 yards; Mrs T, Hocking 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Single ladies’ 100 yards, open handicap: Miss Betty Muir 1, Miss F, Hastings 2, Married men, under 40 years, 160 yards handicap; 0, Aitken 1 T Lovejoy 2, Married men, over 40 years, 100 yards handicap; T, Downing 1, W, Sutherland Staff ladies’ race, 100 yards; Miss Hg?'.Fenwick 1, Miss D, Lyons 2, The return journey was entered upon at six o’clock and a tired but happy party returned to Palmerston. North at 8.30 o'clock after an absence of 13 hours. ;
