BIOGRAPHICAL NOtlS" MR G. SHIRTCLIFFE.
Mr G, Shirtcliffe who, it was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister, is to be chairman of the Royal Commission which is to investigate avenues for economy in State’'services, is chairman of directors of A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd. Born at ..Worksop, England, in 1862, Mr Slifrtchffo came to New Zealand as a boy, and to-day he is regarded as one of the leading businessmen in the Dominion. Mr Shirtcliffe was educated ■at the Riccarton School, and at Christ’s College, He entered business in Canterbury, and was at one time manager, of the Canterbury Farmers’ Go-operative Association at Timnru. He then became associated with the firm of AL S. Paterson and Co., Ltd. He. served oh the Wellington City Council for several vears, and was also a member of the Wellington Harbour Board, and president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce from 1904 to 1907. Mr Shirtcliffe wa3.a member of the Taxation Commission set up by the Government in 1922 and. 1924. He is chairman of the advisory council to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. In May of last year Mr Shirtcliffe was appointed a member of the Hawke’s Bay Rehabilitation Commission. COLONEL J. J. ESSON. Colonel J. J. Esson, who was born at Picton in 1869, was employed in the Postal Department for 26 years before being transferred to the Treasury. In 1916 he .was appointed accountant and assistant-secretary. On the retirement of Colonel - Collins as Auditor-General, and the appointment of Colonel Campbell in his place, Colbnel Esson succeeded the latter as Secretary to the Treasury. At the completion of 44 years’ service-, he voluntarily retired, and was retained as financial adviser to the Government. After the war he was V member of the Economic Commission set up by the Government, and was also a member of the Uniformity Board, covering the different services of the State,-and the Stores Control Board. In. 1926 Colonel Esson was appointed chairman of the Royal Commission which investigated farm finance in various parts of. the world. Subsequently he was appointed chairman of the Royal Commission which investigated farm finanoe in various parts of the world. Subsequently, he was appointed chairman of the Rural Intermediate Credit Board. He saw service, at Gallipoli, and was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the C.M.G. After the evacuation of the Peninsula Colonel Esson was appointed Colonel-Commandant of the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt. He was the first chairman “of the Government Railways Board. MR J. BEGG.
Mr J. Begg is a retired sheepfarmer. During the war years he was a member of the Efficiency Board, and he has been a member of the Board of Agriculture, the Royal Agricultural Society, the Farmers’ Union, and the Navy League. He was also a member of the Taxation Commission of 1924. He contested the. Bruce seat in the Reform interests in 1920. MR J. L. GRIFFIN.
Mr J. L. Griffin is a member of the firm of Clark, Menzies, Griffin, and Ross, public accountants, of Wellington. He was born in Nelson 40 years ago, and was educated at Nelson College and at Victoria University College, where he took the degree of B.Com. After some commercial experience he entered his present firm, in he has been a partner for the last 16 years. He was president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants in 1929, and for the past eightteen months has represented the society on the committee which is revising the Companies Act. MR A.' MACINTOSH.
Mr A. Macintosh is well known throughout Australia and New Zealand as a banker and as a leader of commercial thought. After being _ associated with various hanking institutions in Australia, he came to New Zealand in 1898 as chief auditor for the Bank of New Zealand. From 1993 to 1906 Mr Macintosh was general manager of the Bank of New ZealandOn leaving the hank he was appointed president of the Savings Batik Commissioners of New South Wales. When he returned to New Zealand he did so as superintendent in the Dominion for Dalgetv and Co. He retired from that position in 1916. For nearly four yeaTS during the war Mr Macintosh was a member of the Mumtions .Supplies Board. He served on several important commissions of the past, including .the Public Trust Roval Commission m 1912, and the Soldiers’ Pension Commission, and the Povertv Bav Meat Company Commission. 'For 16 years Mr Macintosh has been a member of the war relief executive. He is also a trustee of Flock House." -
