BACK TO FARMS.

THE TENDENCY IN CANADA. A movement sponsored by the Canadian Department of Immigration for the enoouragement of oolomsation within Canada and conducted in coordination of effort with the railway companies has had a considerable degree of suooess. Detailed returns show that in the past fourteen months approximately 42,882 persons have been returned to the land through this leffbrt. consisting of 6,040 families, averaged at five persons each, and 12,682 single men who were found employment as farm labourers. It is pointed out by Mr W. A, Gordon, Minister of Immigration, that this has been aooomplished without direct financial aid to those assisted ■and at no cost to tho Federal Treasury. Under the system adopted the department and tho railway through their colonisation branches, find the opportunities, bring them before those in a position to take advantago of thorn, and facilitate tho rattier# removal to new homes. The object is to encourage families and Individuals with agricultural experience, who are unemployed or faco tho prospect of unemployment, to return to tho land before their funds become exhausted. They are advised with respect to suitable locations.and with regard to the methods they should employ in. order to minimise the possibility of. failure. “Application of this pohoy is limited to Canadian citizens with some funds and some knowledge of. farming. Experience has demonstrated the futility of putting on the farm with a heavy overhead of indebtedness persons without experience, in agricultural, problems.”
