Rev. W. G. Monckton, of St. Peter s Anglican Church, Takapuna, has retired after 27 years’ service. Mr S. W. Pascall, of London, the head of the Rotary movement of the world, is to visit New Zealand in May next. . Mr W. Hopcroft, of Aokautere, who recently underwent a somewhat serious operation, is progressing very favourably. Mr U. Burdes, of the teaching staff of the Foxton District High School, has been appointed headmaster of the Greatford School.

Mr J. B. Cooper, president of the Manawatu Scottish Society, who has been ill for several months, is making good progress towards recovery. Mr F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, president of the New Zealand. Horticultural Institute, is visiting Christchurch for the annual conference of the society. Mr H. Fayen, of Taradale, who celebrated his 77th birthday a few days ago, is an active playing member of the Taradale Cricket .Club and claims to be the oldest active playing cricketer in New Zealand. Having played for 64 years is a record difficult to surpass. A deputation of North Shore (Auckland) local body representatives and residents waited on Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, during his stay in Auckland advocating that Mr A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata. should be appointed to Cabinet to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr D. Jones.

. Very Rev. Dean Holley is to take charge of the Roman Catholic Church at Napier from the beginning of February. He has for the past few years been parish priest at Timaru. Rev. Father M. A. Murphy, who been in charge of the Napier parish for the past six years, has been transferred to Timaru.

Mr M. G. Thomas, manager of the Feilding branch of the Union Bank of Australia, has received notioe of his promotion to the managership of the New .Plymouth branch, and will leave next month for his new appointment. Mr J. B. Stewart, manager of the Geraldine branch, has been appointed to the vacancy in Feilding. The death occurred at Dunedin last evening of Mr David Larnach, aged 80. Deceased was closely identified with the local Government of Dunedin for about 30 years. He was a member of the Hospital Board from 1910 till 1929, and of the Harbour Board from 1917 continuously until the present time, being chairman in 1924. He was elected to the City Council in 1919, and was a member of it until 1929, with the exoeption of a term of two years. Mr Larnach is survived by one son, Mr D. T. Larnach, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Win to it, and five daughters.

;Mr Charles Duggan, who died at his residence in Sumner, Christchurch, last Saturday, at the age of 90, had been a well-known resident of Christchurch for over 69 , years. Born in Dudley, Warwickshire, England, in 1842, he arrived in Christchurch in 1863, coming out from Home in the sailing skip Chariot of Fame.. The late Mr Duggan took a keen interest in public affairs, and his wide interests made him a large circle of friends. He was a prominent member of the Conyers Masonic Lodge, Christchurch. Mr Duggan was twice married. Mr and Mrs Duggan had been living at Sumner for the past ten years. Those of his children who are still living, are as follow:—Mrs C. F. ‘Spooner ' (Palmerston North), Mrs A. Osborne (Christchurch), Mr Arthur Duggan (Christchurch), Mrs C. A. E. Ferguson (Palmerston North), Mr Louis Duggan (Stratford), Mrs Johnstone (Christchurch), Mr William Duggan (Christchurch), Mrs Walshaw (Sydney), Mr James Duggan (Featherston), Mrs M. Ridley (Dunedin), and. Mrs Rogers (Christchurch). He is also survived by forty-two grandchildren and fifty-nine great-grandchildren.
