PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB’S JUBILEE CARNIVAL.
To celebrate the completion of 26 years’ activity in the city’s aquatic circles the Palmerston North Swimming Club last evening held its silver jubilee carnival. Despite the chilly wind the Alunicipal Baths were well sheltered and an enjoyable programme resulted. In addition to the Palmerston North swimmers there were competitors from Wanganui, Hawera and Feilding and the entrance of these contributed greatly to the success of the events. Among them was Aliss P. Sporle, of Feilding, who has competed with outstanding success in the New Zealand championships. Aliss Sporle provided an instructive interlude when, with Mr Parsonage, she • demonstrated various styles of swimming. The attendance of spectators was a large one, demonstrating the interest aroused in swimming activities in the city.
Mr A. D. Campbell, acting vicepresident of the club, welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that the carnival would prove successful. He mentioned that he had received, a telegram of good wishes from Air J. Devine, an ex-sccretary of the club, and said that Air Devine had greatly lielped the club during his term of office.
Mr W. L. Fitzherbert, patron of the club, who addressed the gathering, said that he recollected the opening of the club when he had competed with Air G. W. Ravenfield. The baths had then been owned by Mr R. Edwards. Air Fitzherbert added that he thought the oldest sporting club was the Palmerston North Tennis Club which had great traditions; in this it was being emulated by the Palmerston North Swimming Club. He hoped that the latter would produce some champion swimmers. New Zealand representatives in football and tennis had been “found” by the Manawatu and it was to be hoped that a champion swimmer would be produced in the city. In conclusion, Mr Fitzherbert mentioned the splendid assistance given the club by Air AlcLeod, the custodian of the baths. '
Mr Campbell, addressing the gathering, said that although Palmerston North had not produced a champion, Feilding, in the Alanawatu Centro area, had done so. Aliss Sporle had competed with marked success at the Dominion championships and, incidentally, considerable credit was duo to her trainer, Air Parsonage. Air C. P. Nash, who donated a trophy for the winner of the ladies’ 33 1-3 yards handicap, was accorded a warm vote of appreciation. The. detailed results of the events arc as follow:
