PRIMARY SCHOOLS
REOPENING TO-DAY. ATTENDANCE OF SCHOLARS. The- 1932. school year for the primary scholars of the city commenced this moaning. It has previously been the custom to resume on a and this year a number of P u P‘ ls J lac * not returned to their schools to-day. The majority of the schools are recommencing the. year with roll numbers which approximate ~to those at the close of last year, but until the end of the week it will be difficult to ascertain what the year’s Tolls will be. . There have been staff changes at all the schools and each of the headmasters has received advice .that the probationary assistants are being replaced by “relieving” teachers under the Education Department.’s, rationing scheme. These teachers will remain for not less .than one term and probably for at least two terms. The Russell- Street School roll approximated 232 pupils this j morning. There were twenty-two admissions as compared with lo pupils who passed out of. Standard’ 6 last year an _ increase this morning of seven. Relieving teachers who have become attached to the school are Misses V. it. Sadd and-B. L. Beard. The Terrace End School showed a reduction of about 35 pupils this morning, 65 pupils having passed through Standard 6 last- year. The roll stands at about 650. Mr L. J.-Hills and Miss E. M, Purnell are now attached to tho staff as relieving teachers. The Hokowhitu School roll stands at about 360—about 14 less than at the end of 1931. There were admissions this morning. Miss E. Birme, relieving teachei\ is the only new member of tue stair. . The College Street School roll is expected to show a decrease of about 40 pupils. There were 30 admissions this morning, but 59 pupils passed out of Standard 6 last year. The roll approximates 500 pupils. Mr R. Warwick, who was formerly on the staff of the Foxton District High Sehopl, replaces Mr A. J. Trevena as senior assistant, and Mr Campbell and Miss Laurenson have been appointed relieving teachers. Miss A. P. W illiams, ivho was absent through .illness in the last term of 1931, has resumed her duties. The West End School roll stands at 371 pupils as compared with 384 last year, there being 18 admissions this morning. Thirty-three pupils left last vear. Attached to the’staff are Mr T. E. Dowds, male assistant, who replaces Mr Attwood and specialises in music; Mr. P. Williams, wno has been in Samoa, and replaces Mr Watts as first assistant: and Miss M. Hill, the relieving teacher ,* The Central School roll shows an increase by the morning enrolments and stands at about 825. The new building is accommodating Standards 1 and 2 pupils while the garage in Lombard Street is being used for Standards 3 to 6. The inTants are occupying the usual building . Miss M. Weeks and Mr M. Leet have been attached to the staff as relieving teachers.
