SCHOOL COMMITTEES

COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL

Tlie monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last night, when Colonel J. H. Whyte presided. Others present were Messrs A. D. H. Worboys, H. F. A. Wollerman, C. L. Turnbull, F. N. Andrews and E. Persson (secretary). The headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourne) was also in attendance.

The headmaster reported:—“The roll at date is 615, the average attendance being 488. The average has been very high—up to nearly 98 per cent, one week. The proficiency examination was held on Monday, 23, while the annual examinations are now completed. The school breaks up on the 16th inst., when a breaking-up function will be held. The school sports are to be held on Wednesday. Tiie swimming season was opened on November 24, and will be resumed after the holidays. In the cricket season just completed our senior team were runners-up to Central School. As this report marks the close of the school year, I take this opportunity of wishing the members a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.”—Compliments were exchanged, Mr Turnbull, on behalf of the members, extending the chairman and the headmaster and his staff the compliments of the season. The chairman, in acknowledging the compliment, took the opportunity of thanking Mr Swinbourn and his staff for the assistance, which had always been readily given. The chairman reported that there were 35 exemptions agreed upon for treatment at the Dental Clinic. The cost to tho committee would be £2 12s 6d. Next year, he added, the charge would be reduced to 4s and it was hoped that increased numbers would result.— The amount was passed for payment. A tender for the supply of a quantity of firewood, for delivery in February, was acceped. Appreciative reference was made to the services of the caretaker and a sum of money was voted him. HOKOWHITU SCHOOL.

Tire monthly meeting of the Hokowkitu School Committee was held last, evening, Mr G. D. Pattlo presiding. Also present were Messrs C. D. Hepburn, P. V. Burns, J. B. Sankey, L. G. Gill and J. B. Fleck. Mr Burns brought forward the matter of representation of city schools on the Palmerston North and District School' Committees’ Association executive, stating that, under the present system, one school might have more than one representative on the executive. He considered that the rules should be such that only one nomination should be made from each committee. On Mr Burns’s motion it was decided to recommend that no school be entitled to more than one representative on the executive. Mr Burns was accorded a warm vote of appreciation for his work in connection with the installation of a very satisfactory electric lighting system in tlie baths at a small cost. Mr A. J. Shailer was accorded a vote of thanks for a donation to the school funds.

Accounts amounting to £35 3s 3d were passed for payment. The headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) reported that the attendance had been good, the average being 330 and the present roll 344. The proficiency examinations were held on November 23 and the results would soon b© available. The final examinations for promotions had been completed and the results showed that a most satisfactory year’s work had been done. On behalf of the staff, Mr Plank extended the compliments of the season to the committee. —The report was adopted. The committee reciprocated Mr Plank’s good wishes and congratulated the staff on the fine work accomplished during the year. Th© monthly baths report, submitted by Mr IT. A. Spencer, the custodian, stated that the takings, including the amount on the opening day, were £3O 19s Hid. The swimming pool had been cleaned and emptied three times. The water had been chlorinated and tested. Lifebuoys were required; the electrical work had been completed and a glass case had been placed at the entrance. —The report was adopted. It was decided that Mr Pattle endeavour to obtain lifebuoys for the baths. „ , , The treasurer (Mr Fleck) reported that there was a credit balance of about £3O at the bank, which was considered quit© satisfactory. The desirability of having children medically examined in private by tne schools medical officer was again brought forward by Mr Burns, who moved that the utmost privacy be obtained. The Palmerston North and District School Committees’ Association had stated that the onus lay with the school committees. The motion was carried by a unanimous vote. Subsequently the committee combined with the ladies’ committee when various matters were discussed. Mr C. Lane, of Clifton Street, who is at present in hospital, was accorded a motion of good wishes for a rapid recovery by the committee.
