Airs Phelan and her two little daughters. Alary and Catherine, are holidaymaking in Alaharahara, being the guests of Airs Phelan’s parents, Air and Airs John Gildca. During the morning service at St. David's Presbyterian Church on Sunday, a vocal solo was sung by Airs D. lleggie, of Runnvthorpe. A delightful breaking-up party was hold at the residence of Air and Mrs 11. G. Dorrington, AlcLean Street, on Friday evening, when Form V. High School pupils and friends were entertained. The rooms had been decorated and a jolly evening was spoilt with dancing, games and competitions. A novelty introduced was a choir contest, which was the cause of a great deal of merriment, particularly the comments of the judges, Messrs Mules and B. Irmis. A charade provided another amusing interlude. The competitions were won by Alossrs A’. S. Purdy, P. Burlaco, Alisses C. Skinner, Al. Afulos and A. Bonny. Alusic for dancing was provided by Air T. Finer, Air Purdy and Aliss J. Grinlinton. Supper was served, a feature being a largo Christmas cake. The evening rlosed at a late hour, the host and hostess being accorded musical honours. In the second day of the Hunter Shield cricket match between Woodvillc and Danncvirkc High School, played at Dannevirkc on Saturday, High School continued their second innings which eventually closed for the total of 123 runs. The principal scorers for High School were Craven (43). Broadbent (21). Hill (14) and Ellingham (13). Bowling for Woodvillc, Burlace secured 4 wickets for 15 runs; Mair, 3 for 30: Nicholson, 1 for 15; Charles. 1 for 13; and Gillespie, 1 for 24. Requiring 105 runs for a four-point win, Woodvillc had lost 6 wickets for 53 runs when stumps were drawn. C. Gallon was the chief scorer with 25 not out.' Woodvillc won on the first innings. The monthly meeting of the Papatawa Women's Institute was held on Saturday afternoon. Airs Alunro presiding over a fair attendance. Owing to the inclement
weather and the prevalence of chicken pox, many were unable to attend. Airs E. Martin gave a full report of the federation meeting held at Takapan which she had attended as a delegate. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. One new member was enrolled, and a warm welcome was extended to her. Owing to the sickness among the children the Christmas free party, which was to have boon held on December 15, has had to he post - poned until the school reopens, after the Christmas holidays. There was no competition for the afternoon, but Aliss D. Cunningham. of Palmerston North, gave a splendid demonstration of making paper flowers; the rose, poppy and the searlet geranium, the institute emblem, being the chosen flowers. A vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrator by acclamation.
During the past week the schools in tlie Woodvillc sub-branch of the Southern 1 Hawke's Bay Boys’ and Girls' Agricultural Clubs have had their calf entries judged and the following awards have been made bv the judges, Messrs R. Papatawa: Type, AI. Colder, 1: Phyllis Colder. 2: Joan Colder. 3. Condition, E. Goldsworthy, 1: M. Colder, 2: AI. Goldsworthy, 3. Group Championship: Type, Allan Arrow (Copelands), 1; Mary Colder (Papatawa). 2: Phyllis Colder (l’apatawa), 3. Condition, Tom Upston (Woodlands Road), 1; Allan Arrow (Hopclands), 2; Joan Arrow (Hopclands), 3. The monthly meeting of the Alaharahara AV.D.F.U. was held on Saturday. Airs I’Anson (president) welcomed all members and visitors, and two new members were enrolled. It was decided to “send Christmas greetings to Airs R. J. C. Richardson, who has left the district, and best wishes to Airs Reid, who has been confined to her bed for a few weeks. The winner of the competition for the best Christmas present, was Aliss Wienn, Aliss Marlow- being second.
