MILSON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILSON, Dec. 13.
The monthly meeting of the Alilson School Committee was held in the schoolroom last evening, Mr F. G. Murphy presiding. Also present wore Messrs Hoskins, Richmond, and Franklyn (secretary). The headmaster (Mr McEwcn) reported that the school roll now stood at 105, the average attendance for the last month being 101. The pi’oficiency examination was hold at Hokowhitu on November 23 and the results will be announced on Wednesday of next week. All the other classes have been examined, and the results forwarded to the Wanganui Education Board. “I wish to place on record,” the report continues, “the work of the staff during the past year. Both tho assistant teachers have worked hard, and the result is very pleasing.” The school will close on Friday, December 16, and will reopen on Wednesday, February 1. Mr McEwen’s report expressed thanks to Mrs R. A. McKenzie, of Alii son’s Lino, and Air B. Thomas for donations of plants for the school gardens, a!«so to tho Terrace End School Committee for the use of the baths, the Public Library for the loan of books, and the Alilson Tennis Club for the use of their courts. Ho also expressed thanks to all those who had supplied cars, etc., for conveying tho school children to football, cricket, basketball and tennis matches. The report concluded with the season’s greetings from tho teaching staff to the School Committee, thanking the latter for their loyal co-ope-ration during the year. The committee decided to have repairs effected to the lock on the front door of the school. Mr Hoskins reported having received two dozen reading books from the Cosmonolitan Club as a donation to the school library. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the club. The chairman reported that the arrangements for the breaking-up concert and Christmas tree, to be hold this week, were well in hand, tho Indies* committee having worked very hard, and secured some of the best available talent in Palmerston North for the concert. Five men under the No. 5 unemployment scheme are at present engaged in the formation of a tennis and basketball court in the school playing area. Accounts amounting to £9 14s wore passed for payment. The meeting clciscd with the chairman wishing tho members the coxnplimerits of the season, Mr W. O. Hoskins, on behalf of tho latter, reciprocating. As 12 pupils will probably be leaving the Milson School at the end of tho year, and few six-year-old children are offering, it is anticipated that the roll number will show a decrease when school resumes. The cricket match arranged for last week-end between the Railway team and Pahiatua had to be abandoned owing to the inclement weather. Heavy rain during the morning decided the Railway team not to make tho trip.
