ENGINEER’S REPORT
.fhe monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council was Tiolcl to-day, the chairman (Cr. Collis) presiding. The acting-engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering) presented the following report on the activities for the past month: —The number of daymen employed averages 20; men employed under the No. 5 scheme number 160. Taonui Hiding.—Very little other than ordinary maintenance has icon carried out in this riding. A few mme stumps have been takon out on Aorangi Rood. The riding truck ha 3 been carting metal from Hounds and ICarero to the riding roads as roquired. Goat’s ruo has been grubbed on a number of roads, and men are nowworking on Foxton Line, having completed to Longbprn. Fennell will bo cut on Foxton Lino at tho end of the present month. Fennell has been cut at thy junction of Monrad Stroet with Foxton Line to improve the visibility at this railway crossing. The motor grader has boen over most of the roads during the month, cutting off corrugations, and raking in loose metal from tho sides.
Mangaone Riding.—Stripping and screening of motal aro still being carried on at James’s Lino pit. Tho protection fence at Bullocky Creok on Napier Road has been raised to conform to improvements effected in widening and raising the filling at this bond; willows have also been cut down to improve the visibility. A _ commencement has boon mado with the cuttings on James's Lino near Mr Addsett’s property to conform to tho now levels and grados. A now cut has been put through, the bridgo shifted to tho correct line, tho old creok filled in, 11 chains of road formation completed, and 14 chains of new drains dug. Twelve chains of formation havo been completed during tho month. Tho total length of 30 chains from Mr O’Donnell’s to Newbury Lino is now completed. Tho bridge will bo shifted to the correct lino as tho opportunity occurs. A start had been mado with tho opening up of Donald’s Road. A now cut has been put through on Mr Hyde’s property to deviate tho creok, thereby obviating tho necessity of two bridges. Tho old metal pit is being drained beforo the road formation can bo proceeded with. A now shaker machine has been consructed for taking out sand, and boulders, and has been working at tho Bunnythorpo metal beap, tho results being most satisfactory. The county team has been employed in carting motal to dumps and carting filling where required on James’s Line. The contractor for kerb and channelling work at Milson bas completed the job. Metalling of tho road is being proceeded with. Tho riding truck has boon patching as required. The motor grader has been over tho more important roads cutting off corrugations which at this time of the year are provalent. Tho contractors for the three-coat sealing on Ivairanga-Bunnythorpo Road commenced during tho month the second and third coat required of them. Work is now completed to Setter’s Lino, and thero now remains another two miles to Bunnythorpo which, when completed, will give an unbroken stretch of sealed road from Palmerston North to Fcilding. Application for scaling this length was mado but owing to financial conditions was not approved. Fitzherbert Riding.—Work in connection with the widening of Bryant’s Hill is nowcompleted, 12 chains of the new fence having been erected. Tho Ivahuterawa bridge and approaches aro now completed except for the extension of one wing which will bo completed next week. New fences havo been erected on top of tho filling; willows planted to obviate erosion, and cuts made to deviato the stream. Altogether, 7039 cubic j-ards of material have been carted in building up tho approaches and metalling same. A commencement was mado with the improvements to the Linton corner; widening and banking havo been in progress, 54 feet of post and rail fence having been erected, and a private hoarding shifted back to improve tho visibility. Repairs havo boen effected to tho bridge on Fitzhorbert East Road which was in very bad condition, 5 new 'stringers, new sheathing, and one pile being required. A temporary bridge had to be erected during the repairs to carry traffic; this has now boen dismantled. Six chains of tho now cut havo been completed through Mr McFarland's property and three chains through Mr Brill’s have been widened to give an increased outlet for tho accumulated water at this point; this work will improve tho county road which at the point was continually being eroded owing to the restricted outlet bolow tho bridgo. All cuttings below Linton have boen cleaned of slips. Trucks havo been mainly patching. Tho motor grader has been over more important roads cutting off corrugations.—Adopted. FINANCIAL STATEMENT.
The following statement of bank accounts was presented by the county clerk (Mr N. I. Nielsen): —County fund, No 1 account, dr. £4729 19s Id; No. 2 account (plant), cr. £7287 15s 4d ; No. 3 account (tarred roads), cr. £577 7s 4d; loan accounts (Fitzherbert riding culverts and bridges account), cr. £93 7s 6d; Fitzherbert West Water Race, cr. £lB 13s 4d; Linton Domain Board, cr. £92 16s 6d; heavy traffic fees account, cr. £635 11s 7d. A statement of riding expenditure disclosed:—Taonui riding: As per estimates, £2134 ss; expended to November, £949 16s 6d; balance £llß4 8s sd. Mangaono riding: As per estimates, £3790; expended, £1691 5s 6d; balance, £2098 14s 6d. Fitzherbert riding : As per estimates, £2603; expended, £1095 7s sd; balance, £1507 12s 7d. RATES STATEMENT. A statement covering outstanding rates disclosed that in the Taonui riding the sum of £7l 3s Id was outstanding for the year 1931-32 and £33 18s 5d for preceding years; in the Mangaone riding the figures were £146 10s 7d and- £ll7 Is lOd respectively, and in the Fitzherebrt riding £332 11s 6d and £132 14s 3d respectively. ■ RATE ROLL. The following transfers on the rate roll were authorised:—Mangaone riding: H. C. Patchell, to P. C. Stubbington, 90 acres; Estate Mrs E. Gore to Wm. Gore, 10 acres 2 roods 21 perches; Estate M. Pedersen to Mrs H. Pedersen, 73 acres 3 roods 9 perches. Taonui: Hunt and Piper to H. E. Hunt, 397 acres; J. F. Clausen to F. A. N. Clausen, 56 acres 20 perches; H. Wingate to W. M. Manderson, 44 acres 3 roods; H. Wingate to W. Clegg, 45 acres; A. P. Butcher to G. W. Trask, 6 acres 12 perches. -Fitzherebrt: D. C. Signal to N. A. Rush, 153 acres 3 roods 28 perches; A. Saunders to T. O. Dahl and W. Prier, 77 acres, 2 perches; J. McQ. Murdock to H. Sutherland, 1 acre 3 roods 1 perch.
