ECONOMIC POLICY
CONSULTATION WITH EXPERTS. GOVERNMENT’S NEW STEP. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. An important development in connection with the Government’s plans for dealing with the economic situation is that the economists Professors Tocker, Higlit and Belsliaw have again been called into consultation. They reported fully on the budgetary position on a former occasion, giving a valuable survey of the financial obligations and resources of the Government.
A conference of these experts with the Minister of Finance and Treasury officials opened this morning. Cabinet is also receiving the ready co-operation of the banking authorities who are becoming quite familiar with the precincts of Parliament Building. TALK WITH BANKERS. WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. Long hours were spent by the Cabinet yesterday in discussing the general economic position preliminary to the preparation of further emergency legislation. Two meetings were again held, one in the afternoon and another in the evening, and it is expected that meetings will be held every night right up to the holidays. Representatives of the banks were present at the afternoon meeting, and although it is understood no attempt was made to consider in complete detail any specific plan, it is believed tha-t there was a full and frank talk on the general situation, and the possible alternative steps that might be taken to meet the position in the New Year.
