SWIMMING
TERRACE END CLUB. At the Terrace End baths on Wednesday, the Terrace End Swimming Club held its first club competition night, wlion there was a team of visitors from the llokowhitu Club. Tho swimming was of an exceptionally high stundard —as good as lias been seen in Palmerston lor some seasons —and the finishes were all most exciting, in many eases giving the judges great difficulty in separating the placed competitors. At a suitable juncture, one of the officials thanked the spectators for attending on an evening that made sitting outsido not very, pleasant, and explained that the proceeds of the carnival were to assist in sending two Terrace End boys (C. Baigent and H. Pierard) to the New Zealand junior and intermediate championships at Invercargill next month. lie also thanked the swimmers, particularly those from the Ilokowhitu club, tor attending and swimming when no prizes were offered. The officials controlling the events were: —Judges, Alessrs A. W. Thompson, L. Pierard and J. Fyfe; timekeeper, Air Y. Fleming; starter, Air W. Selnvarz; recorder and compiler, Mr D. C. Pryor; liandicapper, Air J. Arthur; diving judges, Messrs D. C. Pryor and W. Selnvarz. Tho events resulted as follow: Boys (beginners).—N. Scadden 1, J. Arthur 2, B. Hardie 3. Girls, 25 yards: J. Baigent 1, D. Gibbs 2, E. Hall 3; time, 23 4-ssec. Boys, 25 yards.—First heat: M. Robinson 1, B. Jenkinson 2, J. HunI ter-Will 3; time, 19 l-ssec. Second heat: L. Rowlands 1, B. Stevenson 2; time, 20 secs. Third heat: D. Gilchrist 1, B. Carter 2; time, 18 1-5 sec. Fourth beat: K. Dalil 1, G. Cameron 2; time, 20 2-osecs. Filth heat: S. Sapwell 1, A. Pierard 2; time, SOsecs. First semi-final: D. Gilchrist 1, Al. Robinson 2, B. Jenkinson 3; time, 18 l-ssecs. Second semi-final: B. Carter 1, G. Cameron 2, lv. Dahl 3; time, 20 2-ssecs. Final: D. Gilchrist 1, Al. Robinson 2, B. I Carter 3; time, 18secs; only a touch I separated the three placed swimmers. Alen’s 50 yards.—First heat: B. Smith 1, F. Hopwood (H.) 2; time, 38 2-ssecs. Second heat: G. Pattle (H.) 1, L. Smith 2; time, 38 2-ssecs. Third heat: E. Baigept 1, K. Sapwell 2; time, 37secs. Final: L. Smith 1, G. Pattle 2, B. Smith 3; time, 37 4-ssecs.; a very good finish; won by a touch.
Ladies’ 25 yards. —Miss D. Gibbs 1, Miss J. Baigent 2, Miss W. Barnes 3; time, 18 4-osecs. 50 yards open breaststroke. —First heat: H. Tremewan 1, H. Pierard 2; time, 53 1-5 secs. Second heat: N. Fletcher 1, B. Carter 2; time, 54 4-ssecs. Final: H. Tremewan 1, N. Fletcher 2, H.* Pierard 3; time, SOsecs.; a wonderful race, with Fletcher and Tremewan neck and neck the whole distance; Tremewan won by the barest touch. Ladies’ dive.—Miss D. Gibbs 1, Miss N. “Wood 2, Miss W. Barnes 3. Boys’ dive: It. Jones 1, K. Fletcher 2, It. Carter and S. Sapwell, equal, 3. Men’s dive: J. Shand (H.) 1, H. Tremewan and D. Plank, equal, 2. Boys’ relay (four swimmers each 25 yards): Olympic 1, Nomads 2; time, 83secs. The last lap saw a good race between Gilchrist (Nomads) and Baigent (Olympic) for Baigent to win. by about nine inches. Men’s relay : llokowhitu 1, Terrace End 2. Smith (T.E.) and Pattle (H.) hit the water together for the last 25 yards and fought out a great finish for Pattle to win by the barest margin.
