SCHOOL GATHERINGS
TERRACE END TEACHERS FAREWELLED.
During the morning there was a pleasant ceremony at the Terrace End School, when the occasion was taken to farewell three members of the staff who severed their connection with the schooi this afternoon—Miss Lumsden, who will join the Newbury School after two years at Terrace End, Miss Hastings and Miss Quirke, who conclude their term as assistants under the department’s rationing scheme. Mr A. W. Thompson, the headmaster, spoke of the excellent work which Miss Lumsden had accomplished at the school and pointed out that her instruction in handwork was particularly fine. He had not yet met a teacher with more qualifications in this direction. He expressed regret that Miss Hastings and Miss Quirke had to pass on and expressed appreciation of their work. Mr Thompson then presented Miss Lumsden with a beautiful cut-glass vase.
The opportunity was also taken to acknowledge the splendid services to the school rendered by Mr J. Arthur, the caretaker, and Mrs Arthur making the presentation of a Christmas cake, Mr Thompson spoke ill glowing terms of Mr Arthur's services.
Mr I). C. Pryor, speaking in connection with his swimming activities, said that the fact that Terrace End led the primary schools of the Dominion in life-saving awards, reflected the greatest credit on Mr Arthur. Mr \V. B. Cameron, the chairman ot the School Committee, expressed the committee’s keen appreciation of the loyal co-operation given by Mr Thompson and his staff. The high standard set by Mr Thompson made the committee and Mr Arthur feel that they had something to live up to. said Mr Cameron. who concluded hv extending the season’s greetings to the staff. Mr C. it. Luke, a member of the committee who was also present, spoke in humorous vien as he conveyed appreciation to the staff for their good work. Mas Cameron, the chairwoman of the ladies’ committee, also attended the gathering at which morning tea was served. Mrs Thompson forwarded an apology for unavoidable absence. FUNCTIONS AT HOKOWHITU. There were several small breakingup functions at the Hokowhitu School this morning. The staff foregathered at about 11 o’clock when Mr G. D. Pattle, the chairman of the School Committee, was present and partook of morning tea. The gathering also served to farewell Miss R. Lancaster, who has been on the staff during tho past term. Mr L. J. Plank, the headmaster, spoke in a eulogistic manner of the good service which Miss Lancaster had rendered tho school during her short term of service and Mr Pattle also expressed the committee’s appreciation for what she had accomplished. At the recess the staff also made a presentation to Mr Plank. The children were then assembled on the quadrangle at the rear of the building and were addressed by Mr Plank and Mr Pattle. The headmaster extended wishes for a good holiday and congratulated the pupils on their good work. He urged those who were leaving to keep before them always the school motto, “Play the Game.” Mr Pattle, in his address, praised the work of the teaching staff and expressed gratification at the successes they had achieved. He extended the season’s greetings to the children and spoke of the year of hard work they had accomplished. Mr Pattle then presented tho proficiency and competency certificates won by the sixtli standard pupils, also a medal, donated by Mr J. \V. Spooner for the most improved swimmer, to Denzil Kingsbeer. The function concluded with cheers for Mr Pattle and the staff.
Tlie pupils made several presentations to their teachers during the day. Those of Standard (j expressed their appreciation in a suitable manner to Mr C. Haydon. The presentation of a handsome book was made to Miss It. E. Wapp by the Junior Red Cross Circle in recognition of her valuable work during the year, and the circle also made a presentation to Mr Plank.
