PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Deo. 15. Tho Pahiatua School's public speaking contest took place in tho Anglican schoolroom last evoning when Mr J. Marsh, tho hoadmaster, presided. Thoro were 10 prepared speeches and several iihpromptu spceclies. At the of the speeches the chairman of tho Pahiatua D.H. School Committoo, Mr G. Godfrey Taylor, expressed the appreciation of the audience and commented on the high quality of tho speeches. Rev. V. A. Bianchi then announced tho results as follow: Prepared speech: Tom Mackenzie 1; Majorie Taylor 2. Impromptu speech: Marjorie Taylor 1, Ted Williams 2. On combining tho two results the best speaker for the evening, the judges (Rev. Mr Bianchi and Mr G. H. Smith) decided was Marjorie Taylor, who was also the holder last year. Following supper a brief dance was held. Lcn Barraclough was a popular M.C., and music was provided by Mrs I. Graham, Misses Chatwin and Horrax, and Mr P. Burge. During the evening Lcn Barraclough presented Mr G. L. Stafford, of tho secondary staff, with a brass bowl on a wooden stand as asi expression of affection and his pupils’ good wishes for his married life. The shopping week carnival was continued yestorday afternoon when _ a sports meeting and fire brigade competitions were conductd. In tho evening a bright revue iwas presented.
