PRICE OF BUTTER

LOCAL MARKETING SYSTEM

DAIRY FARMERS’ SUPPORT. Support for the scheme advanced by Mr A. J. Sinclair, secretary-manager of the Te Awamutu Co-operative Dairy Company, for the stabilisation of the local market for butter was voiced at the monthly meeting of the Dairy Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon, but there were some dissentients.

Mr N. Campbell presided, and others present were Messrs J. Boyce, H. Seifert, W. B. Paulding, P. V. Koeldor, W. Short, G. L. Wagstaff, A. N. Morcom, H. Dewar and B. Norman. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. D. Balmer, J. Lyons, \Y. P. IJlykers and Mason.

The chairman stated that a similar sell erne to that being advanced had been operating on a voluntary basis in this district, but two companies which had refused to come in had upset the whole of the conditions for the others. Ho suggested that the proposal should be supported. Mr Koehler expressed the opinion that they should exercise caution, as anything in the direction of a high price on the local market might open up the way for the consumption of margarine.

Mr Seifert also said they should not rush into the matter. If the price was increased consumption might decrease, and there might he created considerable feeling against the farmers. Furthermore, there was the possibility, as mentioned, of margarine securing a run. He thought they should go “a little easy.” Mr Boyce said the price had to lie kept down to a reasonable level until the 70,000 men out of work were in full-time employment again. Mr Morcom said it would he futile to offer butter at a ridiculous price which No. 5 scheme men could not afford. The first essential was closer cooperation between the factories in reducing competition and costs. Mr Koehler stated that he agreed with the principles of the stabilisation scheme, but the price should not he made too high. The chairman: AYe all recognise that.

It was decided, as stated, to support tlie scheme, though a number of members recorded their votes against the motion.
