SECONDARY SCHOOLS
MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The monthly meeting of the Technical School Committee and the High Schools Board of Governors was held last evening, the members present being Mr W. L. Fitzherbert (chairman), Messrs J. A. Nash, M.P., M. H. Oram, T. It. Hodder, W.F. Durward, J. W. Ruthorfurd and W. R. Birnie. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Aitcliison and Mr 0. Monrad.
'Hie director of the Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported that the folowing donations had been received : Associated Board of Music, £1 Is; Mr C. S. Ennis, 10s; Palmerston North City Council, £3O; Mrs E. Major, ss; Mrs Reichenbach, £1; gymnasium fund, Well Wisher, 10s; Mr Alex Geange, ss; Mrs Griffin 4s. At the recent examinations the following results wore obtained: —Pitman’s speed typewriting, 11 seniors passed, 17 juniors passed, five with distinction; Government sliorthand-typistes, one senior, and three juniors passed. Twenty-seven proficiency certificates, four competency certificates and 49 senior free places (evening students) had been obtained. The annual concert was well attended and resulted in a profit of £27 10s. The contractor had finished the house alterations and made a good job. As the double doors placed outside the back entrance to the main building were insufficient to break the force of the westerly gales, the director recommended that an application be made to the department for the space between the pillars opposite room No. 4. to be glassed in on the lines of the work carried out in the balcony. As the result of an accident incurred in the engineering shop, Mr Walker was absent from duty from December 1 to December 7. As Mr F. R. Lloyd had completed his tivoyear period as student teacher, and proposed attending the Training College, the director placed on record the valuable services he had rendered to the school. Miss Margaret Godfrey had done good work during the term as relieving teacher in general subj ects. —Adopted. In the course of his report the rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) placed on record his thanks to Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., for his services in securing the speaker for the breaking-up ceremony and also in expediting the Minister’s sanction to the .College House arrangements for next year. Good wishes for the Christmas season were extended to the members by the rector and was heartily reciprocated. Mrs M. Rhodes (principal of the Girls’ High School) reported that the roll for the past month was 231 and the average attendance 205.3. The average attendance had been low for the last week or two as several girls obtained positions temporarily during the busy season. The grounds were in excellent order. The A tennis team visited Dannevirke on December 12 to play the annual match with the Dannevirke High School and won by 12 sets to nil. The merit and honour cards were presented to the pupils of the school on December 15 by Mrs Aitcliison. Thanks were accorded to Mr C. Woods, of the Y.M.C.A., for kindly judging the drill competition for the championship. The senior "ampionship was awarded to Betty Olliver and the junior to Evelyn Phillips. The matter of pruning the trees at the girls’ hostel was left to the house committee to attend to in conjunction with Mrs. Rhodes.
It was decided that special steps be takon to collect outstanding boarding fees, the matter being left in the hands of Mr Rutherfurd and the chairman. Arrangements were made for the rector to take charge of the College House next year and to reside on the premises. The chairman extended greetings for the Christmas season to the members of the board and thanks for the assistance given him in carrying out his duties, the good wishes being reciprocated by the members.
