FARMING AND COMMERCIAL

WOOL SALE AT TIMARU

KEEN COMPETITION. Per Press Association. TIMARU, Dec. 16. Tho first -wool sale of the season in South Canterbury was held at Timaru to-night, when a catalogue of 10,078 bales wa3 offered to a full and representative bench of buyers, who competed exceedingly keenly. From the outset tho chief competition was coming from the Continental section, Bradford being more in the picture than at the recent sale at Christchurch, the wool apparently being more in keeping with their requirements. The wool opened up in heavier condition than at Christchurch, but was slightly better than at the opening sale in this centre last year, being much brighter and freer from dust. Comparing prices with Christchurch, these can be described as being very firm and in sellers’ favour. Passings were comparatively few. Very little held-over was offered at the auction, but those lots had kept remarkably well and showed very little discolouration. There was a large gallery of tho public, who displayed keen interest through the sale. The top price at the sale was for a line of 16 bales of fine Merino, which realised lid; halfbred brought up to lOjd, and three-quarterbred up to 9|d. There was good competition also for good halfbred necks, at prices which brought up to 9|d. The whole catalogue was disposed of in two hours and a half. Following is the official range of prices:

FARMING NEWS.

RURAL RATING. A Canterbury farmer has sold a line of 40 lambs, about two-thirds of which are Downs, and shipped by the Rangitane, arriving London, January 25, at a price that would net him sgcl per lb delivered at the works. Tho averago weight of the lambs was over 371b —there' being more 36-421 b than under 361 b. . The steamer Port Brisbane, which arrived at Bluff last Sunday from Australia, loaded 10,000 crates of cheese and 3000 boxes of butter at the southern port for London. Tho butter consignment included 2000 boxes which were railed from Dunedin to Bluff. The shipment of produce lifted by the Port Brisbane was an exceptionally large one. A South Australian breeder, Mr W. .T, Dawkins, of Newbold, Gawler River, has a six-tooth Dorset Horn ram Newbold 88 of 1929, which was awarded tho grand championship prize at tho last Sydney Show and which weighs 3291 b. Throe or four years ago he showed a Dorset Horn ram at the Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne shows which sealed 3771 b. Another he bred weighed 3541 b.

CANTERBURY MARKETS.

LOW PRICE FOR POTATOES. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 16. Local merchants have rarely had as quiet a December as the present. There is a littlo talk about, potatoes, but the northern inquiry is limited. Some business was done a few weeks ago at £3 15s, f.0.b., s.i., for April-May-Juno delivery, but offers havo receded since and the figure now mentioned is 70s. A few sales have been made at this price, but it. is too risky to appeal, as it represents about £2 7s 6d on the trucks. Farmers arc not disposed to accept this record low price in December. The potato crops at tho moment are looking well, but not better than they did at this time last year, and the season after the New Year was very unfavourable. Business is practically suspended for tho year and no development in the market would bo expected until mid-January. Seed crops are promising to yield well. The Akaroa production of cocksfoot is expected to bo heavier than usual, but no speculation has developed so far either in cocksfoot or ryegrass.
