CENTRAL SCHOOL

BREAKING-UP FUNCTIONS. Breaking-up functions conducted during the week at the Central School culminated yesterday afternoon with a ceremony in the assembly hall. On Wednesday afternoon the children of the infant classes wero tendered a party at which about 160 parents wero present, when Father Christmas arrived to delight the youngsters. He was welcomed by Mr E. Bury, tho headmaster, and distributed gifts from the large tree which had been arranged in the hall. Mr W. G. Black, the chairman of tho School Committee, was present and voiced his appreciation of the work of tho teachers.

Yesterday morning there was a pleasant function which was also attended by Mr Black. Tho staff provided morning tea and took the opportunity to farewell Messrs K. Cutler and M. Hill, two teachers under the rationing scheme who are leaving the school. Mr Bary referred to their good work and Mr Black conveyed the appreciation of the parents and the ladies’ and men’s committees for their painstaking efforts. At a suitable juncture Mr Bary made a presentation to Beth Harper, who had been responsible for the morning tea arrangements during the year.

At 1.45 o’clock the final breaking-up ceremony took .place in the hall, when there was a good attendance of parents. The combined choirs, under the conductorship- of Mr C. E. Downes, sang “All Through the Night” and the “Anvil Chorus” most harmoniously. Addressing the pupils, Mr Bary said that the day, although a happy one, was tinged with sadness, for the school was losing its leading class, the members of which bad worked their way through the primers and standards. The children’s good work during the year had far outweighed any shortcomings they might have had. He congratulated the successful scholars and encouraged those who were not wholly successful to try again. Mr G. H. Jarrett, who represented the School Committee in the unavoidable absence of Mr Black, spoke of the good work which had been accomplished by Mr Bary and his staff. The school was the finest in New Zealand and the staff was excellent, he said. Mr Jarrett congratulated the pupils who had secured their proficiency certificates and counselled them to play the game in after school life as they had done at Central, and face circumstances cheerfully. He congratulated the school on its sporting successes and concluded by appealing to the parents for continued help. Mr Jarrett then presented the sports championship cup to Edward Hosking, handsome volumes as dux prizes to Donald McAlister and Lola Buick, and senior monitors’ badges for outstanding attention to Pat Ryder, Cora Klee, Edward Hosking and Rex Grant, also the proficiency and competency certificates.

Cheers were then given for the staff and committee and the function concluded with the singing of the school song and the National Anthem. Addressing standard 6 pupils before the conclusion, Mr Bary urged them to ever keep in mind the school motto,

“Live Truly,” no matter wliat circumstances prevailed, or where they were. He later farewelled tho pupils of the class individually.
