EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 17, 1902.
The Manawatu County Council had made an application to the Treasury for provisional approval to raise a loan of £6OO to enable the construction of Kakariki Road ' and Gust’s Lino to be undertaken. It was stated that the finances of the borough were in a worse position than during the previous year to the extent of about £2OOO. The Terrace End School Committee had accepted a tender for the erection of a tablet to the memory of the old boys who served in the South African War. The Labour Department had issued a warning to workmen against flocking to Dunedin for the installation of the electric tramways and the drainage scheme as there was % colony of unemployed there already. Definite steps to erect a Veterans’ Home in the Colony were being taken and the site was expected to be at Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.
