LENGTHY SENTENCE.
THIRTY-FIVE YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT. SYDNEY, Dec. 16. Paul Grierson, 32, who was found guilty of the William Street postal hold-up in September, and who was also found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to Alfred Johnston, a postal officer, came up for sentence to-day. Grierson was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment for blinding Mr Johnson and to ten years for assaulting and robbing Mr Seckold, the terms to be concurrent. Judge Thomson regretted that there was no power to impose a flogging. Tho Federal Ministry has announced that it is paying £IOOO compensation to Mr Johnston and also a life pension of £3 13s lOd a week, in addition to all medical expenses associated with his blindness. The Post-master-General expressed the deepest sympathy of the Government and said Mr Johnston’s case excited the pity of tho whole Commonwealth.
When the hold-up occurred, liquid was thrown in the faces of Messrs Seckold and Johnston, the latter becoming totally blind.
