RANGIOTU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) KANGIUI U, Dec. 18. The school lickl its breaking-up ceremony in the public bail on Friday evening, when there was a fair attendance of parents and residents. The hall was gaily decorated with" paper streamers of red and blue, and the manlier in which the children indulged in the festivities presented a scene ol gaiety. A comprehensive programme of songs, folk dances and games occupied ’the major part of the evening, after which an excellent supper was provided by the ladies’ committee, the children receiving special attention from the members of the School Committee. After the supper adjournment, Mr J. A. Shaw (chairman) presented the proficiency, competency and attendance certificates, together with other prizes donated by tho teachers and residents of tho district. The chairman congratulated Miss Thompson and her assistant, Miss Feist, on their work and for the splendid record established by tho school in the recent examination, the average being most gratifying—eight proficiency certificates and one competency out of nine pupils. Ho tendered tho staff and pupils the season’s greetings and trusted that those scholars who were about to go to higher education would give of tlieir best. He then presented the certificates and prizes as follow: —Proficiency cortifibatos• Nellie Barnes (dux), Ethel Wood, Rona Russell, Molly Rickcrby, Don Board, Raynal Bond, Winston Moore, Charles ’ Chapman. Competency: Douglas Donaldson. Good attendance certificates: Tnhiwi Carkeek, Alan Chapman, Rona Russell Lulu Cook, Betty Shaw, James Cook, Georgina Chapman, Olga Shaw, Don Beard and Douglas Donaldson. Special prizes (donated bv tho teachers) : Ethel Wood (senior class), Trixie Hazlott (intermediate) Doris King (junior). Prizes won for competitions held during tho evening were awarded to Harry Church and Charles Chapman. Following this, two very pleasing presentations were made to Miss Thompson by two pupils of the school on behalf of tho senior and junior scholars respectively as a mark of their appreciation of the great interest sho had always taken in all matters connected with thq school. For tho seniors, Molly Rickerby made tho presentation of a cane and raffia basket, and on behalf of tho junior scholars Hcni Carkeek presented her with a handsome pine-noedlo tray. Both pupils wished Miss Thompson a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Dancing was indulged in by tho adults, excellent music boing kindly supplied, when a most pleasant ' function terminated by the usual greetings and the children dispersed for their summer vacation.

Tho nowly-formed Taikorea Tennis Club played a friendly game with tho local club last Saturday, when, under ideal weather conditions, a pleasant meeting was thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned. Though the homo team won by a substantial margin, tho gamo throughout was of a high order and somo very interesting contests resulted. Tho visitors were entertained to afternoon tea which was provided by the ladies’ social committee. Mr Ward, on behalf of tho Taikorea Club, expressed appreciation for tho excellent arrangements made by the local club, and assured them that they had enjoyed a most enjoyable and profitable aftornoon’s game.
