NEW ZEALAND EMBARGO. EFFECT IN NEW SOUTH WALES. HOW IRRIGATION AREAS SUFFER (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 19, 9.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 19. Tho New Zealand embargo against Australian fruit is expected to react seriously against the irrigation areas of New South Wales, which have worked up a largo trade in New Zealand for citrus fruits.
In an average year the Griffith Producers’ Company alone exports upwards of 60,000 bushels of oranges to New Zealand. Thor© is no disposition by the Griffith Company to blame New Zealand for its retaliatory action as the local growers persistently agitated against the embargoes oil the importation of fruit to Australia, pointing out that tho inevitable retaliation would wreck Australia’s growing export trade in fruits.
SERIOUS VIEW TAKEN. ■ CANBERRA, Dee. 18. Mr J. G. Latham, Federal Minister of Customs, referring to the New Zealand embargo on fruit, points out that the Commonwealth has not placed an embargo on New Zealand fruit. It has only taken precautions owing to the prevalence of fire-blight in the Dominion to prevent its admission to Australia. Ho declares that tho Commonwealth takes a serious view of New Zealand’s action. STRONG REPRESENTATIONS. Received December 19, 11.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 19. The Telegraph’s Melbourne correspondent says that strong representations have been made by the Commonwealth Government to the New Zealand Government following the embargo on Australian fruit.
