FIRE ON STEAMER.
OUTBREAK AMONG COPRA. SYDNEY, Dec. 18. A fire in No. 1 hold of the steamer Taronga, 6700 tons, which is loading wool at Pyrmont, yesterday afternoon required the efforts of 120 firemen till evening before it could be controlled. The outbreak occurred among copra loaded at Rabaul, which burned fiercely. Brigades and two firefloats poured large quantities of water into the hold and the ship developed such a list that the fire floats had to begin pumping water out at one side while the fire fighters continued their work on the other side. The damage amounted to £SOOO.
Tho Taronga is not structurally damaged and expects to proceed on her voyage on Tuesday according to schedule.
