BULLS, Dec. 18.
Tho broaking-up eoremonica at tho Hulls
School were largely attended by parents ami friends on Friday afternoon. Mr S. Rich represented the school cornmittco and presided over the gallicring. Messrs Holland and Cutis represented the Town Board. Mr F. A. Holland m personated Father Christmas and addressed the pupils, congratulating those who had been successful in 'passing their examinations, ami cheering those who simply look longer to pass. They had lo thank their teachers for patience and kindness, and should learn a lesson thereby ami practise !hose virtues. He wished them all a very happy Christmas, and distributed sweets, adding that presents would he given out on Christinas Eve. Tho pupils sang Christmas carols, Mrs Ball-Guymer acting as accompanisto, and afternoon tea was served under the supervision of Mosdames Cutis, Ellery.and Campion. Mr Rich presented certificates to successful pupils us follow: —Proficiency: C. Young, D. Robins, J. Cole, 31. Logan and F. Howard. Competency: A. Button, F. Garard, J. Ellery and D. Harper. Logan, F. Howard. Turakina anil Bulls Defence Rifle Clubs fired a match on tho Bulls range on Saturday afternoon, tho conditions being 7 shots” at 300yd.s and 10 shots at 500yds. In the early stages the conditions were unfavourable, but later some good scores were , registered. Turakina won by 4 points, and the best performances were 11. Uoile’s possible and Miss W. Goodall’s 49, both at 500yds. L. Huddleston put on a possible at 500y<ls for Bulls, and H. Meads, IJ.1 J . Tltorby, T. Prichard anil W. Tarrant each recorded 48 at 500. Bulls and Marton Junction Cricket Clubs played a friendly match on Bulls Domain during the week-end. The weather was perfect, and tho wicket and outfield fast, with the result that scoring was fast and the exhibition of cricket bright and interesting. Bulls batted first and made 165, Salmon hitting out freely for 43 (Sadler 36 not out, Reeve 23, Young 20). The visitors could not. stand up against Reeve’s fine bowling, and wore all out for 106, R. Whitcombe making 38. In their second strike Bulls hit I up 98 in short time, Reeve being undefcat- | cd with 39. The visitors played out time,: losing 6 wickets for 87, and Bulls won by | 59 on tho first innings. Hulls Bowling Club is sending three or four rinks to Redding on Wednesday afternoon, one link (composed of J. M. (Vouchor, J. Ransom, A. K. Drew ami H. Stevens) challenging for the llarford ’J ikis. Tho Christmas carnival was opened _ in Bulls on Saturday evening. The woatnor was fine and there was a big crowd of country people in town. In the unavoidable absence of Mr J. Binklntei, M.P., the opening ccrcinonv was conducted by Mr A. Stuart, M.l\, wlio was welcomed by the chairman of the Town Board (Mr J. yWalker) and other leading townsfolk. Mr Stuart congratulated the townspeople on their happy choice of a carnival week to dispel gloom, and wished all a very happy time. The Palmerston North Pipo Band was in attendance and played lively airs until a late hour. Tho streets and shops were illuminated with coloured electric lights, and everything looked quite gay.
