CENTRAL RELIEF FUND.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Palmerston North Central Relief Committee met yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) presiding. Others present were Messrs A. J. Pnillipps (secretary). P. S. Larcomb (treasurer), W. R. Kells, R. L. C. Aitchison, R. Hood, B. J. Jacobs, Rev. J. . D. McArthur. Rev. Father Herlihy, Ensign Thorne, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., Mr L, H. Collinson, and Mesdames Mansford, Abraham, Trask, Sinclair, Haywood. The chairman referred to the loss sustained both by the community and the committee in the death of Mr V. T. Dibble, auditor of the committee, and a motion of sympathy with Mrs Dibble was carried in silence, all standing. It was decided to send letters of thanks to the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association for the free use of the building for the recent auction sale; to Mr C. Rabone, for acting as auctioneer ; to Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame, Ltd., for use of a depot for parcels, and to others for assistance. . . It was arranged that the drawing of the art union for paintings should take place on Saturday morning. Advice having been received from the Unemployment Boa.rd that no further subsidy would be paid to the committee after December 31, the position was discussed. It was the opinion that the food depot would have to be carried on, even if on a smaller scale. The chairman and the secretary were authorised to make necessary arrangements for a smaller depot. Meantime the food depot will be open this week on the usual conditions. Next week it will be open on Friday and Saturday. December 30 and 31. for the issue of meat and rations. The secretary reported that the average number receiving assistance weekly was 395. The pound parcel scheme was worth approximately £3 a week. Accounts totalling £285 10s were passed for payment. The committee expected to be able to pay its Decem-
her accounts from tho funds available when the payments are due. The food depot and other depots have been open just over 18 months, and the committee decided to thank all those ladies and gentlemen who had assisted during that period. In closing the meeting the Mayor extended to those present best wishes for a. merry Christmas and a more prosperous New Year.
