EASTERN TRADE MENACE.

GOODS FROM JAPAN. DUNEDIN, Dec. 20. “The Eastern trade menace is something that should be regarded by the whole Empire as a matter of first importance,” said Mr J. Sutherland Ross, when speaking at the dinner given in honour of the Minister of Einance, Hon, W. Downie Stewart. In reply, Mr Stewart said that the subject had been brought up repeatedly, particularly in connection with manufactures that were competing with New Zealand goods. There was no doubt that there was a tremendous influx of such goods from Japan. He had thought that the question might have been brought up at Ottawa by other Dominions, but probably they had not yet felt the full impact of the competition. There was no doubt that what Mr Ross had said was quite true. The expansion of these industries was phenomenal, and the statistics were extraordinary. One was led to the conclusion that some steps must be taken to meet the situation.
