RAILWAY TRAFFIC.

HEAVY GOODS TONNAGE. SPECIAL EXPRESSES FULL. Over 6000 tons of goods traffic, including the weight of the wagons, were handled at Palmerston North railway station yesterday. Through traffic to Wellington accounted for 2700 tons of this quantity. With the advent of the busy period, large seasonal increases have been recorded at this centre in passenger and goods traffic, and much rolling stock is on the move. The increased volume is seasonal but is stated to have manifested itself later than usual this year. Large quantities of wool are being forwarded from the season’s clip to the stores in Wellington. Fair quantities of timber and coal are being dealt with, but there are many pigs and sheep being transported, the latter class of stock proceeding to stations near Wellington Twenty-eight goods trains are at present passing through Palmerston North daily Saturday last was a heavy day for passenger expresses, 14 being handled besides eight other pasaenger trains Holiday travel has commenced in earnest. Last week-end the trains were booked to capacity, and extra carriages had to be provided Coincident with this, the staff have to cone with the heavier goods traffic, to facilitate which two special trains are proceeding through to Wellington daily, and one coming north to n night express for Auckland is a big train on each run, having beek practically booked up to Saturday next, when a special heavy express of 14 cars, keeping to practically the same schedule as the north-bound Limited, will be run to relieve the final pressure on the service by lastjninute Christmas travellers.
