PREPARATIONS AT ELLERSLIE. lAIPRESSIVE WORK. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. The weather was fine though dull for the semi-final gallops at Ellcrslie to-day. The course proper, with poles 35ft out, was in most demand. The tan, No. 3 grass, Iho two-ycar-old and hurdles tracks were also available. The going, was perfect. Tho best efforts over a distance on tho course proper wore those of Cricket Bat, Silver Scorn, Antique and Tout lo Alond, while the best sprints were recorded by Sunny Song, Grand Sport, The Quorn, Cadland and Psychologist. The two-year-olds that impressed most were Dole, Fracas, Red Manfred, Pelagia, Impasto and Gay Seton. On tho course proper Silver Scorn (Eastwood) was allotted a mile. She ran the first furlong in 13sec., two in 24 2-5, four in 50 2-5 and completed the journey in 1.41 4-5. Sho went very evenly and could have put up faster time. Supreme Ruler and Ruling King ran five furlongs in 1.4 3-5 from almost a standing start, tho former pleasing tho better. Red Sun (Wiggins) and Berate (Eastwood) started off slowly over a round, being timed to run the last in 1.45 2-5. They did not have much pace on till the seven furlongs post was reached and they ran home from there In 1.31 1-5. Rod Sun finished several lengths in front, but Berate could have beon closer. Tho two-year-olds, Dole and Pegged Exchange, completed five furlongs in 1.4. Both worked well. The Cup candidates, Fast Passage (Eastwood) and Concentrate (Emerson) uere companions over a mile run in 1.47. last Passage was drawing away at the finish, but neither was doing his best. Antique (Parsons) Tout le Alond (Biggins) and Gay Crest (E. Manson) were associated over a round in 2.4 4-5. ino last seven lurlongs took 1.53 2-5 and the final half mile 52 4-ssec. Antique finished in front with Tout le Mond closing op. Gay Crest worked nicely. The best effort of the morning over a mile was credited to Cricket liat. He ran the first two furlongs in 24 2-ssee, tour in 50scc and completed tho distance in 1.41 1-5, the final six furlongs taking 1.16 4-5. This was one of the best gallops seen hero for some time over tins distance. ~ Grand Sport and The Quorn ran half a mile in 50sec, the former having a shade tho better of it. Karangapai, carrying a good weight, ran six furlongs in 1.18 2-5, linishing on. Fracas was sent over five furlongs, being timed to run tho last half mile in 49 4-sscc. Grand Review worked over six. furlongs in 1.23. Princess Doreen was given strong work, but was not sent against the watch. The Great Northern Foal Stakes candidate, Red Manfred, completed five furlongs in 1.4, running on nicely. Great Star did strong work over a round in 2.20 1-5. Ho was not doing his best. Cadland reeled off half a mile in 50 2-5 sec impressively. Epigram and Guarantee ran two furlongs in 26 l-sscc and five in 1.5 3-5, tho former being a shade in front. Impasto and Gay Seton finished on-terms after sprinting three furlongs in 37sec. Both went freely. Midian went seven furlongs comfortably in 1.28 and was anxious to go faster. Sunny Sky, Merry Damon and Sunny Bachelor wore companions over six furlongs, running tho first three in 37 3-ssoc and the full distance in 1.17 2-5. Sunny Sky pleased most. Arise and Diatomous ran three furlongs in 38 4-sscc.

Psychologist registered a smart effort over five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. Lordly Knight was allotted a seven furlongs task and recorded 1.33 3-5. On the tan, Jaloux cantered to the top of the straight and completed a round in 1.50 4-5. Azalea was with him over the last seven furlongs which occupied 1.32 2-5. This was a first-class effort.

Broken Rule and All Humbug ran five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, the luttcr impressing most.

TRACK WORK AT TAKANINI. SOAIE BRILLIANT SPRINTS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. Some brilliant sprints were recorded at Takanini this morning when both Exaggeration and Tea Trader set up now records for the track. The inside grass with polos 6ft. out was in use, and it was very fast. Tea Trader, who was the first out, covored five furlongs in 1.0 2-5 without being kicked out. Speedmint and Royal Artist worked over eleven furlongs, the pace being clapped on at the mile and tho pair coming home together in 1.43 4-5. Both went pleasingly. Gay Alarigold was doing better than Chief Joy at the conclusion of a mile, which was run in 1.44 4-5. Tho former went very well and could have registered better time.

Exaggeration and Greek Gold began smartly at tlie six furlong post and were still together pasing the three furlong peg, their time being 34 3-ssec. They covered the full distance in 1.12 4-5, the former being a neck iii front. Gold Pocket was two lengths too good for Expectancy over half a mile run in 49 l-ssec. Great Emblem, Pillow Eight and Gold Trail, who was taken over from Ellcrslio by J. Cameron, were sent over a mile and a-quartcr. They covered the first six furlongs in 1.18 4-5 and came home over tho last half mile in 54soc, taking 2.12 4-5 for tho mile and a-quarter. Pillow light finished half a length in front of Gold Trail, who is stated not to bo a good track worker. Great Emblem hung on surprisingly well, being only a length away. GALLOPS AT WINGATUI. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 22. Thero was a strong wind blowing at Wingatui this morning. ON THE GRASS. Lord Argosy and Princess Argosy ran six furlongs in 1.19. Gold Dress and Fino Weather took 1.20, Cleaver and Bell 11 dl 1.21, Blue Hill and Colonel Quex 1.22, Gold Paper 1.19 4-5. Fair Weather ran four furlongs in 59sec. Juno the Third covered five furlongs in 64scc. Gold Boy ran tho last three of four furlongs in 39scc. Reminder did six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. Sliipshapo ran five furlongs in 68 2-ssec, Bold Brigand and Witch of Erin taking 65scc. Tippling and Red Racer did eight furlongs in 1.49 3-5; Salanum and Ruling Pen seven in 1.37. ON THE PLOUGH.

Bluo Metal and Daring Deed ran five furlongs in 68 2-ssec; Ilklcy and Accumulate six in 1.21 2-5. Shock did the last three of four furlongs in 45sec. Amy Johnson and Mobile did tho last three of four furlongs in 43scc. TIGERISH NOT COMING. It is reported locally on reliable authority that Tigerism will fulfill his Auckland Cup engagement instead of coining to Awapuni. It is anticipated, however, that Royal Bengal, who raoes in tho same interests, will bo at the local fixturo. Tho Palmerston North horseman, C. W. France, is going afield for the holiday fixtures and will be at tho Now Plymouth meeting where one of his mounts of Boxing Day will bo Illuininnto.
