PREPARING FOR BOXING BAY. WORKERS AT AWAPUNI. (By “Binocular.”) Excellent conditions were offering for training- operations at Awapuni this morning, the tracks being dry and fast. Both the course proper and the plough were freely usod, the flags on the former being, however, wide out. lON THE COURSE PROPER. Catalogue (Gray), After Money (Broughton) and Safari "(Reed) were associated in a half mile gallop. Safari tailed off early, leaving the other pair to race on terms. Catalogue, who had the inside running, was holding a silght advantage at the post after doing the distance in 52 l-ssecs. Tlio stable companion to Princess Boreen is showing considerable improvement. Trojan Melody (Anderson) had tho advantage over Lady Court (Thompson) with Tannin (Voitro) beaten off after leaving tivo furlongs behind in 1.6, tho initial furlong having taken 12 3-ssocs. and two 25 secs. Wait and See (Chisholm) strode over half a mile at a comfortable pace, the last three furlongs taking 41jsccs. Toxmiss; a Lackham-—Grey Lady representative who has been in residence at Awapuni for the past two or three weeks, had W. Broughton in tho saddle when sho ran. three furlongs in 39secs. Royal Jest (Bradley) displayed a good turn of early speed when sire lasted just long enough to beat Colossian (Anderson) at the close of throe furlongs in 38 1-5, Hint (Chisholm) being two or three lengths back ON THE PLOUGH. Bcaconsfield (Broughton) and Nebulae (Reed) kept on terms throughout in a six furlongs gallop. They ran the initial furlong in 12 1-Ssec, three in 37 1-5, tho half milo in 52sec, and the full distance in 1.20. While Bcaconsfield appeared to be travelling within himself, it was a promising performance on the part of Nebulae.. Morrath (Voitro) drew clear of Mercian Prince (Anderson) in the closing stages of a six furlongs gallop in 1.20. Tho loft tho first furlong behind in 12 4-ssec and tho half mile in 53jSec. but speeded up in tho run down tho straight. Beau Gallanto (Reed) led 800 Acre (Broughton) throughout in a seven furlongs task in the smart time of 1.34. They ran the first, furlong in 12 4-sscc, two in 25 3-s=ec and the half mile in 51sec. Beau Gallanto was doing it very nicely at the finish, the filly having to bo sent along to keep at his saddle girth. Statuary (McBowell), who will revert from hurdle company to contest tho Grandstand Handicap on tho opening day of the

local fixture, was running on strongly at the conclusion of a seven furlongs gallop with Joyspoar (Faulkner) after negotiating the distance in 1.34 l-ssec. Headland (Voitre), who does not claim an engagement till the second day, run a mile in 1.49. Tho Acre gelding was tho only candidate to bo tried out over the distance, and it was quite a satisfactory performance on his part. Golden Chant (Reed), who will be having her first race on Boxing Bay, left half a mile behind in 54 3-sscc. This mare is a full-sister to the speedy but erratic Journet and promises to come good with time. 1 1 Senegal (McBowell), who opened his winning account at Feilding, registered a smart performance when lie covered five furlongs in 1.5. The Nigger Minstrel gelding will not raco till tho second day. Laokoon (Shearman) and a Tribulation gelding (Anderson) from the same stable took 15sec for the first furlong, but nevertheless ran six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. Tho latter finished tho better, having a two lengths’ advantage over his companion, but Laokoon was tender in front at the conclusion of tho task. Minstrel Lad (Anderson), alone, ran seven furlongs in the satisfactory time of 1.34 2-5. The chestnut was a little slow to begin, the first furlong taking Msecs and tho first two 27 2-5, and tho half milo 53.2-5. Jean Ladosio (Anderson) fulfilled a similar task, but the marc took 1.36 3-5, although she_ ran tho first two in tho same time as Minstrel Lad. The Arausio mare injured a tendon when racing at Woodville, but she is making a good recovery. OVER THE FENCES. Tho only jumper to bo sent over tho fences was Easterly. With A. E. Stratton in the saddle, she negotiated three flights, giving quite a fair- display. However, her action is still somewhat scratchy. WATPUKURAU MEETING. Following are the weights to bo carried in. the Maiden Plato at Waipukurau on Boxing Bay : —Tarclia, Wine Tray, Mon Roi 9.1, Tukemanu 9.0, Speedway, Granny Quex 8.10, Joy Stick, Hibiscus 8.4, Royal Bash, Marais 7.13.

NOTES. R. E. Coveny will ride Great Star in the Auckland Cup. The Randwick trainers, F. Williams and G. Price, intend being present at tho next yearling sales at Trentham. Tho northern owner, Mr E. H. Citeksey, has decided to curtail his racing activities and ho has leased both Princess Bedo and Baroscope. Inflation, who is enjoying a spell, is stated to be doing well and ho will be brought back into work in the noar future. There is every possibility of the Paper Money colt contesting tho Foxton Cup. Mr George Brown in whoso colours Red Bank raced originally, has leased High Society from Mr R. Blv, of Woodvillo. The Lord Quex —Circle Lady gelding has entered L. Knapp’s stable at Awapuni and later on he will probably bo found filling the role of a hurdler. Of commanding stamp, the chestnut looks to be an idoal hurdle horse. Tavern Knight, of whom very flattering reports have been current, is reported from tlie north to have gono sore, and unless he makes a rapid recovery he may not take his place in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The apprentice J. A. McFarlnno, who won on Weatherwiso in the Waipa Plate on Saturday, was having only his second ride in a raco and it brought him his first win. McFarlano was apprenticed to H. Gray at Takanini. A three-year-old full-brother to Broad Acre —who was a good class performer in his day—was well supported at, the Taumarunui meeting. Racing under the cognomen of Sinking Fund, the three-year-old faded out after loading to the turn for home. He promises to make good. Tho four-year-old mare, High Tor, a winner at tho New' Zealand Cup meeting, has been off the scene for a few weoks as a result of jarring a joint. A southern report states that she is making good progress and it is the intention of her ownertrainer to got her ready to race again about Easter.

The imported horse Colonel Cygntts is again in work at Wingatui, but there is little prospect of his being ready for the holiday fixtures. All going well, however, he will bo brought north for the Wellington meeting in January. Red Heckle was not far behind fho winner at the finish of the Akaroa Handicap on Saturday, but his performance was not quito so good as his admirers expected (says Argus). He was never far behind the leaders, but though he was running on, there was not tho customary brilliant dash about his final effort. Ho is very well, however, and a win should como his way on his northern holiday trip. Bracketed with Redspray a( the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday was tho thrce-ycar-old gelding Giipit, who is owned by Messrs G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb, the joint owners of Merry Peel. Giipit is by Cockpit from a Sylvia Park marc, and was presented to her present owners last year by Mr J. Gillies, who died in Hastings recently. He is being trained at Washdyko by E. J. Ellis. The veteran steeplechaser, Mosstrooper, is to bo given another chance during the coming winter. His retirement after the last Victoria Grand National Meeting was announced, but ho has given overy encouragement since to put him into work again. Mosstrooper was awarded the champion hack prize at a recent show in Melbourne. Steve Bonoghue celebrated bis fortyeighth birthday in October, and, at the time, had ridden exactly 48 winners this season. With that total ho was tenth on the winning list. Bonoghue headed the jockeys’ list, ir. England nine seasons, and his record includes six wins in the Berbv. While Bonoghuo is a veteran, ho is nearly six years younger than R. Lewis, who won the Bendigo Cup on Roc several weeks back. Lewis is the oldest jockey of prominence riding in Australia. The closo of the flat racing season in England has been remarkable for the number of women engaged in the racing. It is prophesied that women will take a more important part still in racing in tho future. Lord Queensborough’s daughter, the lion. Borothy Paget, is one of tho best-known women connected with the turf; Mrs Chester Beatty won tho Manchester November Handicap; Mrs Robinson’s Pullover had a sensational win in the Cambridgeshire Handicap, and sho also won the Chester Cup; Mrs MvcKecn won the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood; and Mrs Arthur James, a well-known society woman, won tho Coronation Cup at, Epsom. All these women take racing seriously, and know their job of what horses to buy. The ambition of most women owners is to win the Derby. Some idea of their position in tho racing world is given by the fact that at the Easter week-end women owners in fiat race and steeplechase meetings won 33 races in three days.

COMING SOUTH. M. J. CARROLL’S PLANS. Last Easter the Te Rapa owner-trainer, M. J. Carroll, followed tho unusual course of leaving the happy hunting fields of the north to compete at the Wairarapa meeting. The venture was not unprofitable for Paganelli won the open sprint on the first day, while Holly Hohn, ran a third on the second day. Carroll intends foresaking the Auckland meeting this Christinas and will race I’agnnelli and Holly Hohn at the Manawatu meeting with Wairarapa to follow. Although now eight years old, Paganelli apparently retains his form wonderfully well, for in his four starts this season ho has won twice and run third once. His stable niato lias also been showing improved form of late, for he was second lo Glen Rata over nine furlongs at Takapnna and ns he has been weighted at 9.8. in the Tokomnrn Highweight and at 7.13 in the Tararua Hack Handicap, lie is quito well treated. The prospects, to say the least, have apparently been sufficient to encourage tho mentor to undertake tho trip.
