PEAT FIRE DANGERS
CONCERN AT TE AROHA. TE AROHA, Dec. 22. The danger of farm lands and flax groves from outbreaks of peat fires, which have been experienced in the past on the Hauraki Plains at this time of the year, was discussed at a meeting of the Piako County Council. Mr Johnson said that recently an outbreak had threatened the farms along Otway Road, involving a great deal of work on the part of the council staff, and causing much anxiety to property holders, many of whom were engaged in harvesting operations. A common mistake, said Mr Johnson, was made in trying to extinguish the fires by cutting trenches and throwing the excavated material on to the fire again. This procedure only had the effect of adding fuel to the flames, which would burn for days. The chairman, Mr W. R. Lowry, said the existing dry weather gave every encouragement to fires, which had been known to originate from the throwing down of a cigarette. The council decided to issue a warning to the public on the matter and to have notices erected.
