BEAUTIFUL AWAPUNI. FROCKS AT CHRISTMAS RACE MEETING. A multitude of sweet peas at their gayest, bordered by a long pink ribbon of antirrhinums, welcomed racegoers from both sides of tho drive at Awapuni yesterday. The cool green of the saddling paddock stretched invitingly to where one’s eye was caught by the glorious blaze of colour round tho memorial fountain. There were yellow antirrhinums at one side, pink and mauve stocks at another and so on in delightful variation, while above tho sparkling water played refreshingly against a background of rose covered arches. The flower beds on the lawn were another attractive sight. Hole again variety was the keynote and colour combinations were endless and charming. But it was not in the flower beds only that colour and individuality showed. Women as gaily dressed as the flowers thronged the lawns and grandstand. Indeed, it is long since one has seen such rainbow colourings at any public gathering. For the first time for many years no particular tone was dominant. On Wednesday evening last the Cheltenham branch of the Women’s Institute combined with tho school committee and local residents in giving a most enjoyable social as a farewell to two particularly popular members of tho community, Mr and Mrs Athol Shannon, on the eve of their departure from the district. The stage which had been pleasingly decorated was arranged as a lounge and the programme carried out consisted of dance numbers, amusing games, items both vocal and instrumental and community singing. Proceedings were in the hands of Mrs E. E. Short (president of the Cheltenham branch of the Women’s Institute), who welcomed the guests of honour and all others upon their arrival, while Mr H. Branch, who led in the community singing and assisted generally, also contributed greatly to the success of tho function. Prior to the supper internal, Mrs Short, in speaking on behalf of the local branch of the Women’s Institute, said that Mrs Shannon, who had been a member of the committee since the inception of the branch and was also a member of the Wellington Provincial Federation, would be greatly missed. Little Miss Connie Wood handed Mrs Shannon and her daughter, Miss Joan Shannon, beautiful bouquets. A resume of the public activities of Mr and Mrs Shannon during their residence in Cheltenham was given by Mr H. Wood (schoolmaster), who said that both had been not only exceedingly popular residents but also most helpful ones. Following musical honours both guests feelingly replied and thanked all in attendance for their good wishes. The dainty, supper served was g resided over by Mesdames Shepherd, [. Brooker, H.
