LAWN TENNIS TEST.
AUSTRALIA AND U.S.A. MELBOURNE, Dec. 26. In the international tennis Test K. Gledhill (U.S.A.) beat C. Sproule (Australia) 6 —3, 3—6, 6—3: J. Crawford (Australia) beat AY. Allison (U.S.A.) 6—3, 6 —4; H. Hopman (Australia) beat H. A r ines (U.S.A.), 6 —4, I—6, B—6. Allison and ALm Ryn (U.S.A.) beat Sproule and McGrath (Australia), 4—6, 9—7, 6—3, 6—4. The courts were slow after heavy rain, but improved as play progressed. Crawford was in brilliant form and this enhances Australia’s prospects considerably. Hopman proved the surprise of the day, beating Vines, the world’s champion. Playing AUnes’s backhand, Hopman fought admirably. Vines appeared lethargic, but, when roused, his cannonball service did not perturb Hopman. Van Ryn showed a return to form, while Allison in the doubles was particularly effective. McGrath was playing well, but his overhead shots were weak against the American tosses. Gledhill is developing rapidly and will be the Americans’ strongest against our second and third players. The slow courts to-dav reduced the standard of play considerably.
