SECOND ROUND PLAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. The Chess Congress second round commenced this morning. The following was the draw: —Erskine v. Faulknor; Maddox v. Goldstein; Kelling v. Beyer; Severne v. Hicks; Jones v. Crakanthorp; Scott v. Miller. Before the adjournment Faulknor had decisively defeated Erskine. The latter played the English opening and Faulknor won the exchange by a well calculated movement. Then he sacrificed a bishop for a forced mate. The Jones-Crnkanthorp match was watched with interest. It was a queen pawn opening. At the adjournment Jones had lost the exchange and was two pawns down. The positions were equal in the Severne-Hicks contest, the French defence being adopted. Miller has lost a bishop against Scott, the latter opening with a queens pawn. The Roy Lopez was played in the Kelliug-Beyer match. Kelling is a pawn to the good. Maddox is making a good fight against Goldstein. The positions are level following a queen’s pawn opening. .
