PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 2<. In the Canterbury v. Auckland 1 junket Shield match Auckland’s innings was continued in fine weather. At 10U Merritt bowled a sensational over beating Matlieson with every ball, but missing the wicket by a hair s breadth. Two hundred was reached in 198 minutes. Vivian’s good innings ended when he put a ball from Cromb into* Bellamy’s hands at second slip. 2165 —65. . Dacro joined Matlieson, but the iatter was almost immediately caught at the wicket. 2216 —23. Pearson, who followed, was unhappy facing. Cromb, but Dacre scored eleven off his next over.
Merritt, who had been resting, came on again, and got Dacre in the first over. The batsman lifted the ball to deep square-leg, where Kerr was waiting. 233—7—15. • Bush joined Pearson, and the scoring rate became painfully slow. Cromb bowled four successive maidens. Merritt came on again and Bush lifted a tempting half-volley to deep cover, an easy catch. 2738 —27. Garrard followed, and the score crept to 280, and then 290, and Page took a turn with the ball. In his second over Pearson was well caught in the slips. 297—9—29. At the tea adjournment twenty runs were still needed for a first innings lead. Merritt ended the innings by clean bowling Gerrard. Auckland’s 305 runs had been scored in 310 minutes. Disaster came early in Canterbury’s second innings when Hamilton was set back by a smart catch by Dacre. Talbot and Roberts, both batting confidently and stylishly, sent 50 up for 45 minutes’ play. Roberts gave an easy chance to Dacre, which was dropped, but in the next over Bush bowled him with a yorker. Kerr and Talbot played out time. TO-DAY’S PLAY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 23. The cricket match, Canterbury v. Auckland, was continued.’ Cromb opened quietly, placing singles and pairs and Talbot steadied down. Safe shots brought his tally to 96. Then he played a maiden against the accurate Weir. Meantime, quiet placements to leg gave Croinb double figures. A neat glance to the leg boundary off Weir brought Talbot his century. * after 180 minutes’ batting. Though there was an easy chance in it the innings was a great one, being characterised by sound defence and some slashing scoring shots. He proved himself an adept at forcing them to the on and was the only batsman to attack Vivian with success. The total stood at 180 and Talbot’s innings had made the game safe for his side. Cromb and Talbot carried on steadilv. until the score was 212, when Cromb' went out leg before to Bush for 24. He had batted 65 minutes. WELLINGTON v. OTAGO. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Dec. 28. In the AVellington v. Otago match to-day the ball had to be watched carefully as it was playing some tricks. Dunning tried the leg theory. Badcock’s accurate bowling kept the batsmen subdued, James reaching 20 in 80 minutes. At 63 Elmes replaced Dunning, but was not troublesome. A single off'Badcock gave James 20 after 80 minutes at the crease. Dempster reached the same number in half that time. The batsmen were giving no chances, and the Otago ground fielding was good. James played a solid innings for 100 minutes, ending when he snicked Badcock to the ’keeper.—7s 4—24. O’Brien joined Dempster and at 85 Moloney relieved Elmes. At lunch the score was 86 for 4.
